Thai Premier receives South African ambassador

BANGKOK, 29 November 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has welcomed the South African ambassador and the executive secretary of the Group of 77 (G77).

Executive Secretary of G77 Mourad Ahmia and Kingsley Mamabolo, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of South Africa and Chair of G77 for 2015, paid a courtesy call on Gen Prayut at the Government House in a bid to strengthen diplomatic relations with Thailand.

Mr Mamabolo commended Thailand for taking up the honorable task of G77 Chairmanship for the year 2016. He stressed the importance of the G77's presence in the United Nations and its role in dealing with the issues of developing countries.

In fulfilling its responsibility as the chair of G77, Gen Prayut said Thailand is determined to serve as a bridge-builder among developing countries, as well as between developing and developed countries in order to achieve the sustainable development goals. Thailand is also determined to maintain cohesiveness among G77 members, the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations with diverse background and developmental levels.

The United Nations was founded in 1945. Apartheid was enforced in 1948. So I believe you meant that during the apartheid period all ambassadors were white South Africans. Apartheid was ended by 1993.

Perhaps a bit of bridge building within Thailand first would be a good idea before trying to dictate to other democratic countries.

And certainly not a white in Thailand - until 1993 anyway when diplomatic relations were formed.

After all, under apartheid (unsurprisingly pronounced apart - hate) Thais were 'classified' as non-white so I could have been put in jail for marrying my wonderful wife. If she were Japanese it would have been fine though as they were 'classified' white...

So long as that bridge doesn't cross human rights and freedom of expression. The current Thai government has nothing to share on those aspects and has no interest in applying foreign standards to its own society.
