CHUMPON: -- Provincial authorities yesterday employed heavy machinery to clear nearly 100-kilometres of a beach in Chumphon's Lang Suan district after it was covered in crude oil on Monday evening. Most of the oil deposit was disposed off by burying it.

The operation in Tambon Bang Nam Cheud was reportedly started after provincial governor Somdee Khachayangyeun asked people to look for a solution to solve the problem.

The oil deposit will be buried 20-metres underground about 200 metres from the shore, Bang Nam Cheud's village chief Suchat Tangsurat said, adding that he suggested this method because "residents have to help themselves before responsible agencies look into it later".

Bang Namcheud sub-district administrative organisation chief Banyong Inthamat yesterday also filed a police complaint against those behind oil spill.

Burried in the sand, out of sight out of mind but the pollution continues, the oil will leach into the sea and groundwater, one litre of oil contaminates more than 20,000 of groundwater.

Very high-tech solution...par for the course.

So if your house is burning down the fire department will come when you have exhausted resources. This will certainly help the budget. When do the responsible agencies look into it?

Aren't there laws against oil spills? Is Thailand waiting for the people in the conference in Paris to prevent and clean up oil spills? There seems to be a need for attitude adjustment.

That's a big oil spill. Why hasn't that been prominently featured in the news?

I'm not so sure this isn't a viable way to dispose of oil. Oil is an organic material and will decompose when exposed to soil microorganisms and oxygen. I suppose if it's too close to the ocean and gets flooded with water it wouldn't work...

In the US when an old gas station is decommissioned, the underground tanks are removed and so is the contaminated soil all around them. The soil is hauled to a place where it can be spread out onto the ground and over a couple of years the oil is cleaned by nature.

I have no idea what the process or intent is here.

If their intent is to pollute the groundwater 200 meters inland, they're doing an excellent job.

The correct options are:

- oil separation and reuse

- disposal in lined landfill

- incineration

They are going to dig a 20m whole just next to the shoreline? For 100 km? How much oil washed up? 100km long slick?

That's quite a lot.

Are you sure-sure it's '100 kilometres of a beach in Chumphon's Lang Suan district', yes? How long is Lang Suan district's coastline then? Thais and metric units (and maths in general)... Can someone from the area please confirm? Was it 10 'kilo' (like Thais say), 1 kilo, ...or 100 meter?
