Hua Lampong Train Station closed on Dec 11th

BANGKOK, 7 December 2015 (NNT)-Train commuters are urged to board trains at either Bang Sue or Makkasan Stations instead of Hua Lampong on December 11 to allow for the cycling event ‘BIKE FOR DAD’.

Mr. Thanongsak Pongprasert of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said trains bound for the central train station or Hua Lampong this Friday will pick up passengers at Bang Sue and Makkasan stations from noon until 20.00 hrs.

Train tracks in the vicinity of Hua Lampong Station will be covered with metal sheets to prevent cycling accidents. Meanwhile, the Bank of Thailand (BoT) will suspend its counter service on Friday to allow the event to take place. However, telephone and online services at BoT will remain open for customers.

Bad precedent. And I'm a cyclist.

Why should (what should be) a major transport center have to close? Perhaps the organizers should have chosen a better route, one that did NOT impact mass transit centers. But then that would have required some serious forethought, something Thailand is NOT known for.

Incredible. "Major" "modern" city that can't even handle one event.

Why would anyone close down a crucially important public transport node for a bicycling event - and on a day when throngs of people are going to leave town for the provinces due to the long weekend? Are the participants cycling through the train station?

typical thai logic....cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

In Chiang Mai, they've decided to cycle through the centre of town. Gonna be chaos sad.png

If only everyone knew whether Friday was a working day, or not. Seems like it is officially a working day but one government department has asked for private employers to give their employees a day off.

This is a bike ride and they were talking F1 laugh.png

My wife also doesn't know if she has to work on Friday in BKK. Soo Thai...thumbsup.gif

Give 4 days warning that Hua Lampong will close for a day, classic.

Autocorrect suggested Hua Lampooned, possibly more appropriate.

Covering the rail tracks with metal sheets. Let's hope it doesn't rain - everyone will be on their arse. Looking forward to the chaotic conclusion of this event.

And they want a Formula One Street race circuit.

Metal sheets over train tracks, hmmm.

We're due to leave Thon Buri station to Kanchanaburi that morning. I know different lines in different parts of the city, but wondering if it'll have any effect? Really don't want to be told that our train is sold out when we arrive.

What distance do the bikers have to ride ? I bet they will need to do more as announced beforehand....

Does anyone know if Friday is to be an official holiday or is it ' discretionary ' which will result in confusion ?

It's a simple decision yet the junta seem incapable of making it.

The owner of a restaurant i use had his wife call the local police and municipal authorities so he knew if it was worthwhile to open, sell grog etc and no one could answer as they didn't know !

Nobody knows what's going to happen this friday, it seems to hard for the organisers to inform the taxpayers of BKK.

No official national holiday has been given for the 11th Dec. Wait and see if it is announced today? If not, no day off.

any cyclist who cant navigate a set of train tracks should stay off a bike.

as for the use of metal sheets, now thats just scary.

hope for a light drizzle and wait for the carnage

Metal sheets over train tracks, hmmm.

Lets just hope they remember to remove them before the trains start running again.

So Comical. The whole economy brought to a standstill for a bike ride in a city that does nothing to reduce traffic and encourage bikes or other form transport 364 days a year.

This should be entertaining. Next time do the event around Sukhumvit to maximize the mayhem and chaos.

Because other cities never close down parts of their infrastructure for major events?

Mindless Thaibashing at its best. Well done chaps.

lot's of rain plz

No holiday Friday. I was looking forward to a 4 day break but no the killjoy junta spoil the day again. Bastards.

You're funny. If new york closed down every time there was a parade we'd have more holidays than Thailand. And bike rides with tens if thousands of people ? We got those too. Longer than this ride even. And we got actual marathons where you run a full course and not four laps around a park or ones that start at midnight. And for each and every event, you would never know is going on unless you were right there. No need for this back and forth nonsense, about whether its a public holiday or shutting down public transport which you need even MORE on days like this. This is just a sorry case of poor infrastructure, morons in government and a cult.

Just plain nutty. This is like Penn Central in New York closing. It is freaking transportation hub.

Thonburi is miles away from Hualampong. I don't see why the Kanchanaburi service would not be running and no, it will not be sold out. The train is all 3rd class so they can cram as many people as need be inside. Enjoy your trip!
