Australia Joins Thailand in Anti-Graft Battle

CANBERRA: -- Corruption is a major burden on the world’s global economy. Corruption accounts for 5% of global GDP, with over $1 trillion paid in bribes every year. In terms of doing business globally, this accounts for 10% of all business costs around the world. Making matters worse, these figures rise to 25% when trying to obtain contracts in developing countries.

Corruption is a major issue for all businesses around the world.

Global and local companies, both large and small, have suffered as a result of corruption. Legal and reputation risks are overshadowed by the discouragement of investment in many developing countries. Business bribes are viewed as a form of tax, and the necessity to bribe local governments is increasing the cost of doing business in many countries.

Corruption also undermines the very fundamentals of democracy, and is against the law in the vast majority of countries around the world. Human rights violations are also increased as a result of corruption.

International Anti-Corruption Day will take place on December 9. The event is a way to demonstrate that no country is immune to corruption, and that countries need to work together to root out corruption that is causing such grief to local economies.

Australia has joined Thailand, along with 177 other countries, as part of the UN Convention Against Corruption.

You're not going to battle corruption by circle-jerking and repeating mantras. It will take a two-front approach: Very stiff international penalties, and educating the masses to be intolerant of corruption.

Australian corruption is different, our politicians give concessions to industry while in power , in return they receive director ships after politics ,while all the time selling out the taxpayer.

Welcome to the wonderful failed dream called "democracy" and "politics".

It only works when there are honest, hardworking, good people involved, otherwise it's simply an easy way to make more money, power and control for yourself. Pretty much like it is now the world over, not just in Thailand or Australia.

This is called Lobbyism, rampant also in Europe, and harder to prove.

It does not matter what country,,,,there is corruption at all levels,,,,from the innocent ,,,,It's not what you know but who you know,,,, to the multi million dollar Government and Corporate crime,No one is ever going to stop that,,, Slowing it down at the higher levels would be a good start.

Australia have not joined Thailand to fight corruption, the country joined the UN convention against corruption. Why the misleading headline ? Is someone trying to say Thailand is leading the fight against corruption ? In which case they must just look at the park corruption case to see its not true.
