Democracy Study Group vows to return to Rajabhakti Park during New Year's holidays

BANGKOK: -- The defiant leader of the Democracy Study Group has vowed to return to the Rajabhakti Park in Hua Hin during the New Year’s holidays to carry on with the group’s attempt to expose alleged corruption in the park project.

Mr Sirawich Seriwiwat and his group planned to travel to the park by train on Monday but their journey was cut short by the military when it stopped the train at Ban Pong railway station in Ratchaburi and disconnected their carriage from the train. The activist group was later taken to a military barrack for interrogation before they were released Monday night.

The military claimed their action to prevent the group from visiting the park was meant to head off a confrontation with local residents opposed to the group’s political motive in visiting the park.

Sirawich appeared at Thammasat University this afternoon for a planned press conference only to meet with objection from the police who were on the campus. After negotiations, the press conference was allowed to proceed.

Sirawich said he didn’t understand why his group was blocked from visiting the park whereas his opposition group was allowed to demonstrate and to harass his group.

The group leader claimed he did not sign a memorandum of understanding with the military promising not to visit the park. He vowed to make another train ride to the park during the New Year’s holidays.

Smart move by these kids to target corruption in the army rather than the coup. I don't think the army would be stupid enough to close the park for "repairs" again. My fear is that next time there may be a "confrontation with local residents", but that among those claiming to be residents will be men with short haircuts who look more used to wearing uniforms.

Is history about to repeat itself? Thammasat students have a proud but tragic history of standing up to repressive regimes.

Indeed!

In Thailand history repeats itself, time and again. For as long as Thainess if touted as the Golden Rule for all to follow, nothing will change.

Check out the dictator Sarit Thanarat. The current Junta is rosy and light compared to him.

"After Sarit's death, his reputation took a heavy blow when a bitter inheritance battle between his son, Major Setha Thanarat, and his young wife, Thanpuying Vichitra Thanarat, revealed the massive extent of Sarit's wealth (US$140 million). He was discovered to have owned a trust company, a brewery, 51 cars and some 30 plots of land, most of which he gave to the dozens of mistresses he was found to have had. Thai language newspapers published the names of 100 women who claimed to have shared his bed, shocking the public when it was learnt how corrupt he had actually been." Thainess, Thainess uber ales!

Democracy study group my a$$, they are likely paid by the reds and their dear leader to make waves.

That being said I am against corruption at every level so I do hope the truth comes out.

Is this democracy group also against the rice pledging scheme and other corruption by the Shin's?

I would like to have them answer that publicly just to set the record straight. Then we will see what they truly believe in.

I ONLY wish when they return it is more like 1,000 people flooding the entrance and 1,000 more riding on the trains to back them up...and then 1,000 more after that....things are soon to change here I see more Thai's Daily ready to Go and the Junta will back down and allow more than 5 people to gather, unless it's a bunch of OLD women and Geriatric Brainwashed Men out for a walk with their Golden framed Elvis Portraits of their Rock Star.....THAT is ALWAYS allowed and I am sure PAID for!

Yet another but Thaksin post. I believe the rice pledging scheme has ended and any corruption related to it is already being dealt with.

These people are drawing attention to possible corruption into the park. I am lost as to why they would suddenly have no right to draw attention to this particular case, as it will otherwise be swept under the rug.

Is this just a case of being against corruption if the corruption is being done by the wrong people, as it surely looks that way. The good people have been equally corrupt for decades, there is no possible way to deny the obvious.
