Malaysia, Cambodia Sign Two MoUs On Recruitment Of Cambodians

Featured Replies

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia and Cambodia today signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on the recruitment of workers and maids.

The two MoUs outline the process of recruitment, employment and repatriation in which recruitment will be managed systematically and the workers' rights protected.

Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem said the recruitment activity would be conducted via the licensed Malaysian Recruitment Agency (MRA) and its Cambodian counterpart, the Cambodian Recruitment Agency (CRA).

"Under the MoUs before Cambodians come to Malaysia to work both the MRA together with CRA will make available their contract of employment so that they understand, among others, the payment of wages and accomodation.

"This is to ensure the Cambodian workers understand and know what is going to happen when they arrive here," he told reporters at the signing of the MOUs here today.

The two MoUs were signed by Riot on behalf of Malaysia while Cambodia was represented by its Labour and Vocational Training Minister, Ith Samsheng.

Riot said the allocation of workers in various sectors would be determined by the demand from employers here.

He said there would be further discussions by senior officials of both countries to finetune the MoUs.

Currently, there are about 8,000 registered Cambodian workers in Malaysia with 3,000 of them being maids.

However, Riot said the number of unregistered Cambodian workers in the country is unknown.

On Oct 2011, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen suspended maids to Malaysia after reports of abuse by both Malaysian employers and Cambodian recruitment agencies.
