First constitution draft will be finished late Jan; NLA

CHONBURI, 13 December 2015 (NNT) - The first draft of the new constitution will be finalized in January, according to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA).

Surachai Liengboonlertchai, NLA first vice president, said the process of drafting the permanent charter is very crucial to the 20-month roadmap and that the first draft must be completed by January 29th as scheduled.

His comment was heard during a seminar/hearing session in Chonburi where the 3 rivers of reform including the NLA, the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA), and the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) met the people of Chonburi.

The 3 rivers took this opportunity to have participants express their opinions on the new constitution. Once compiled, these opinions will be forwarded to the main CDC panel.

The NLA will continue hosting hearing sessions in all 4 regions of Thailand until the first draft is finished.

4 months after the completion of the initial draft, a public referendum will be staged, he added.

The current draft has not been published. It will reportedly have over 200 sections. What is your opinion?

1. Too thick

2. Too thin.

3. Just right.

4. When do we eat?

People have been asked what they would like to see in a constitution.Of course it would have been nice if the total process, all discussions, etc., etc. would have been life broadcasted, but I fear only a handful of TVF posters would ever watch. The only way to get the Thai population interested is having frequent half hour broadcasts during 'soap' time.

So, late January the draft text. I guess by that time some kind soul will also provide a reasonable English translation to make sure people here (should) know what they talk about.

"....the process of drafting the permanent charter..."

Permanent?? Yeah, right!

"4 months after the completion of the initial draft, a public referendum will be staged"

Likely the final draft will be released after 3 months and continuous one-sided and unopposed promotion by the 5 Rivers bringing all government, military and national media outlets resources to bear. Expect public campaigns by Suthep and Issara supporting the junta's draft charter.

The proposed 2007 draft constitution was printed only in Thai for the referenedum. This put Malay-Thais at a disadvantage. So don't expect an official translation in any other language until approved by the referendum. Like the 2007 constitution, only a simple majority of votes cast is needed to pass the constitution.

Let's take bets on how long this one will last. I say less than three years.

Edit: wait a minute, so draft in January, referemdum in 4 months, so we can have elections in 2016 right ?

Oh and how many bloody rivers are there, three, four or five, I'm confused.

What happened to the first constitution draft that was unanimously rejected?
