Russia fires warning shots at 'provocative' Turkish fishing boat

BRUSSELS: -- More tension between Moscow and Ankara after a Russian warship fired warning shots at a Turkish vessel apparently to avoid a collision in the Aegean.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry the destroyer Smetlivy was forced into the action due to what is called “provocation” by the Turkish fishing boat.

The incident took place off the Greek Island of Limnos. Moscow claims the fishing boat came too close and failed to respond to warnings from the destroyer which is in the region in support of Russia’s campaign against rebels in Syria. Ankara says it will investigate but the captain of the Turkish boat said he was unaware that his vessel had been shot at.

It’s the latest source tension between the two nations which are at odds over Syria and the Turkish shooting down of a Russian military jet last month. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who called the downing of the plane. “a stab in the back”, has since imposed economic sanctions on Turkey as a retaliatory measure.

According to Reuters:

At 0603 GMT (2.03pm Singapore time), the Russian warship, which was at anchor, spotted a Turkish fishing boat some 1,000 metres away, the defence ministry said, adding the boat had been approaching it from the right. "Despite numerous attempts by the Smetlivy, the crew of the Turkish seiner would not engage in radio contact and did not respond to special visual signals," the ministry added.

Moscow said the crew had to fire small arms in the direction of the boat at "a guaranteed survivability distance" when there were some 600 metres between the two vessels "to prevent the collision of the ships."
"Immediately after that the Turkish vessel drastically changed course and continued its movement past the Smetlivy at the distance of 540 metres without engaging in contact with the Russian crew," the ministry said.

So the Russian warship was at anchor!

Didn't even know they were shot at lol. That's embarrassing for the Russians.

Well actually that highlights the fact that either the Turk was lying, or he was not in charge of the boat at the time, and the crew did not report the incident to him.

The Turkihs boat was heading toward the Russian destroyer at anchor, and only veered away, passing 540m from the ship, AFTER the Russians fired warning shots in their direction while still about 600m away.

So if the Turkish boat did not know it as being shot at, why suddenly veer away?

I think at 300 meter distance the Russians would make them know.....

I guess they used just some very small gun as they didn't want to make a big case out of it.

Don't know what crazy idea Turkey had, but seems the captain didn't want to take the option with the 72 virgins. Or his head runs into a club and someone other took over?

This is the new tuff Putin after he'd just finished meeting at the Defense/Offence Ministry in Moscow and said Russian forces must react decisively against military threats from other nations (Turkey!).

The Russian Navy destroyer machine gunning at a crapy fishing boat that is out of range is the first statement of Putin's new tuffness.

Number one, the destroyer was at anchor so it was a sitting duck. Number two by the time the destroyer radar crew and duty officer decided the boat was getting too close, the captain had no time to pour more vodka load up bigger booming ammunition to fire.

Number three, good thing the destroyer only fired firecrackers at the Turkish boat cause the whole region is crawling with Turkish Navy submarines. The Russian destroyer would have been a goner.

Turkey is a peninsula commanding a strategic strait so it has a 221 ship navy to include a pack of attack submarines. Since the Su-24 shootdown two Turkish Navy subs have started to provide company to the Russian cruiser Moskovy that is off the Syrian coast.

Russian ASW (anti-submarine warfare) consists of five 1960s turboprop planes recently upgraded to fly with some updated technologies. Russian ASW capability is just about zero. Russian ASW capabilities amount to little more than providing instant-inflate life vests to its navy.

A 'spy' boat does not need to get in that close to do its work.

Nor would it want to get in so close. It was Erdogan letting Putin know the coastal areas of Turkey and the vital straits belong to Turkey.

Last week a Turkish submarine and Coast Guard vessel met a Russian Navy transport ship at the Dardanelles. Made it a tight squeeze through the strait for the Russians.

A couple of days before that the Russian destroyer had passed through the Dardanelles turning its deck missiles pointed at Turkey while Russian sailors gave the one finger salute and a full moon.

Erdogan is a nutty guy but he knows how to get under someone's skin. Putin and his outsized ego and grandiose self-construct is Erdogan's perfect sucker victim. This is a classic present day clash of two empire sized egos of the Old World determined to make a win-lose outcome.

And another racist Russiophobe gloats about Russias passive reaction to this fishing boat. I wonder what they will be saying when Russia sinks something out there.

"oh my God !! WW3, article 5 ! Putin is a madman !"

No sorry you wrong , he would be repeating like a parrot that Russian economy is weak while US economy in trillions dollar debt is booming.

Back on the subject, Turkey has been irritating Putin, this was first incident , there was another just today when turkey tried to block 2 Russian rigs to be towed .

Turkey is sending clear message as martime agreement is up for renewal in 2016.

The difference between turkey and Russia is that Putin thinks 3 steps ahead, says nothing and then comes blazing , turkey does not have enough brain cells and already spilled out its plans

Remind me again how many subs turkey has and your source of info how many crawling in the Black Sea ?

Then use google translate and educate yourself on the number of subs and the kind of subs Russia has and where most are stationed .

You would need google translate so that you would actually be posting from a reliable source not an American one which does not have a clue what Russia has, unless Russia shows it.

Then may be a map to understand where Russian Black Sea fleet is and what it consists of. ;)

Get a grip on yourself there Harsh.

Words like Americaphobe and democracyphobe could start to get thrown around rather easily too. One of the few things that can be said however is that Putin is a Chekist.

The Putin fanboyz support a Chekist in the Kremlin, meaning the KGB and the GRU (Soviet military intelligence) never left it. When Putin back in 1999-2000 moved into his new diggs he gathered up all the good ol' boyz from both and put 'em at the top of the government with him.

The Chekists have been running Russia back and into the ground since Yeltsin moved out. Virtually every nouveou riche boss in the Kremlin of this that or the other thing commiserates in the whining of Putin that the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century was the collapse of the USSR.

ME is always a volatile situation and with Syria in chaos one foreign country's plane and two military personnel have been lost already. In the time, place, circumstances, any country could lose any asset human or machine in the blink of an eye.

Erdogan and Putin have their own private and personal war in addition to the issues such as Daesh, Assad, refugees, more than a quarter of a million Syrians killed, peace talks and so much more.

Putin knows Angela Merkel is in charge of Europe so when she tells Putin where and when he'll have to get off, that's when Putin will get up to declare victory and sit back down again.

Knowledge of the Russian language has its advantages, although they are not many. However a lot of Russian elites who publish, give speeches and lectures, teach, report or are quoted in reports etc etc do it in English. Other stuff written in Russian gets translated too. So live and learn.

Russian submarines have themselves sent more Russian sailors to the bottom than have Russia's naval and military opponents combined.

Turkey is a peninsula with seas on three sides, the north, west, south. it owns and commands the Dardanelles and the Bosporus. The decisive military point here is that the Russian navy has numerous surface ships that need to pass through waters Turkey has military and naval control over, on, under and of. This includes a couple of tight straits that provide access from virtual inland seas, close in land masses and navigational routes through a proliferation of islands in the eastern Med to include Suez.

The Montreux Convention of 1936 agreed conditions and terms under which Turkey could close the straits and the bodies of water that wash up on the country. Putin says only during a war. Erdogan says to include if Turkey feels a direct military threat from a power that uses the waters. Putin btw never saw this one coming either.

Russia and Turkey on War Footing

The Russian state-run propaganda machine is currently fanning anti-Turkish vitriol full-time. Economic ties between Russia and Turkey are being effectively severed, while military forces have been put on high alert. Is this escalation a mere PR exercise to mobilize the public so that it may forget about Russia’s economic doldrums, or could this crisis spin out of control?

Funny stuff.

Black Sea is essentially an inland sea. It connects to the world's seas and oceans only through the straits controlled by Turkey (Nato). The fact makes the Russian Navy Black Sea Fleet sitting ducks on a pond. It is more than obvious the fleet can't go anywhere, can't hide anywhere, can't camaflouge itself as floating seaweed or dolphins in motion.

The Turkish Strait leads to the Med which is controlled by the US 6th (Mediterranean) Fleet based in Italy (Nato). The Med-Atlantic Ocean is accessed via Strait of Gibraltar controlled by the UK (Nato). Russia's only route to the Indian Ocean is via the Suez Canal which is controlled by the US 5th Fleet at Bahrain (Nato) which also controls the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. And don't forget Diego Garcia (UK-US-Nato) where B-52s et al are stationed in the western Indian Ocean off Africa and well within range of Iran.

These fleets and bases have existed from the Cold War against Soviet Russia and they continue to exist today because of the Chekist Putin and his world.

Since SecDef Ashton Carter took over at the Pentagon the US has ended 15 years of strategic ambiguity as to who is behind Door Number One as the chief US strategic enemy. It is Russia. Beijing is behind Door Number Two and Iran is behind Door Number Three. SecDef Carter is embarking on a journey through the ME and its immediate Nato countries to get everyone on the same page.

Forget about President Obama. SecDef Carter has been in effective charge of war and peace since he took over at the Pentagon. Carter sent the US Navy to the South China Sea to bamboozle the CCP there. Now it's Putin's turn. Putin's fun time of recent years is over already and the Chekist just don't know or realise it yet. This new movie is coming soon to a reality near you.

When did Putin say he'd cut off the natural gas flow to Turkey??? Where's the statement, the quote.

This is yet another Putin fanboyz fantasy of reckless rhetoric and their 3 a.m. wakeup wet dream.

Putin never threatened to cut off natural gas to Europe during Ukraine, right up to the present. Only the Chekist Putin's fanboyz said that. Here now the Putin fanboyz are full of fantasy ideations once again.

A 100% cutoff against Europe would cost Putin $1 billion a day. Same to Turkey would cost Putin $80 million a day. Putin's war in Syria is costing big bucks each day too.

Turkey has a Japanese-French consortium contracted for a second nuclear energy plant that will take over the present first one if Russia cancels on it.

Putin has already sunk $3.5 billion into the preliminary stages of the first $22 bn Turkish plant and faces stiff punitive terms for any unilateral cancellation of the contract. Putin took serious gas last year when EU member Bulgaria threw Putin out and shut down construction of his first South Stream pipeline there. That one itself left several billion of bucks of incompleted infrastructure for another contractor to pick up on.

If Putin had a brain he'd be dangerous to other people besides only himself. DELETED

and if they blew the thing out of the water, you would call them a bunch of overly aggressive jerks.

They didn't blow it out of the water and they're still jerks regardless.

Putin is demanding an apology and promise not to do it again, prosecution of the principals involved in the shootdown, financial compensation. In other words, the tsar-commissar Putin is demanding unconditional surrender by Erdogan and Turkey.

If such a thing had happened to a Nato country figher plane the reaction would be de-escalatory, not tyrannic and high-handed demands that are from the outset impossible to cave into.

In Erdogan Putin has made a bitter enemy out of a previous and rare friendly relationship. He stomps and shouts arbitrary orders and commands to Ergogan and Turkey. Putin is a child who is in over his head which is not at all deep to begin with.
