BANGKOK: -- If today you woke up a little bit late, thinking that it was still dark and the sun didn't rise yet.

You were right as today the sun rose at 6.36 am, a bit later than yesterday. If you were accustomed to wake up by yourself with the sense of sunlight, and not by alarm clock , then you would be misled by sun light.

Today is the Winter solstice which means a longer night time and shorter day time.

According to the director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, Vice Professor Boonraksa Sunthorntham, winter solstice is an astronomical phenomenon marking the shortest day and the longest night of the year.

He said the winter solstice happens every year when the Sun rises and sets in the most southerly declinations, thus making the shortest day and the longest night of the year.

He said in Thailand, the sun rose this morning at 6.36 am and will set at 5.55 pm Bangkok time.

This meant that today’s day time would be only 11 hours and 19 minutes, and therefore people would feel the night would come faster today, he said.

He said in the Northern hemisphere, it will be the start of the winter, and the start of summer in the Southern hemisphere.

Today, the night will be 41 minutes longer than normal in Thailand.

possibly the stupidest article of the year. they say that the night will be 41 minutes longer than normal?? What is normal? The amount of daylight is different EVERY DAY!!!!

They make it sound like tomorrow will be back to normal and the days will be 41 minutes longer again. Ridiculous.

The shortest day of the year is Dec 21 the longest day is June 21(at least in the northern hemisphere).

Where do they find these reporters?

Dec 22 this year just to be correct (in Thailand and Europe at least).

"Normal" refers to equinox. 12h.

Sure not the best wording,

11:19 to 12:00 is 41 min.

I have seen more stupid reports.

The difference is barely perceptible if you're used to the18 hour summer days and 6 hour winter days of the norther latitudes.

When I read the link I thought they were suggesting it only happens in Thailand!. The 'hub' of shortest days?

It's a well-known fact that the universe revolves around Thailand. Well-known in Thailand, anyway.
