snoop1130
Officers seize illegal umbrellas, mats from Phuket beachBy Chutharat PlerinPhuket GazettePHUKET: -- In the wake of an anonymous complaint to the Governor's Office, officials seized about 100 illegal beach mats and umbrellas from Surin Beach this morning.“We sent a team of about 30 officers in a joint mission to the beach after receiving a complaint that the beach vendors were breaking the rules,” Cherng Talay Police Superintendent Serm Kwannimit told the Phuket Gazette. All beach furniture was banned on Surin Beach following pushy vendors breaching the 10 per cent zone, which had originally allowed them to offer services in designated areas. Following the ban, the beach was dubbed a ‘Beach of Honor’ to mark HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and HM Queen Sirikit’s visit to its sands in 1959 (story here).“None of the vendors claimed ownership of the items, so nobody has been charged. However, all the beach furniture was confiscated and taken to the police station,” said Col Serm. “We are not picking on anyone. We are just enforcing the law. If vendors want the items back, they can collect them at the station and be charged with encroaching on public land.”Full Story: http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-news/Officers-seize-illegal-umbrellas-mats-Phuket-beach/62700?desktopversion#ad-image-0 -- Phuket Gazette 2015-12-

Lampang2
If the things went to the police station they are basically back to the owners. If they had went to military storage that would have been a loss.

ricaticaCR
I really wish they do the same on Pattaya-Jomtien Beaches!!!!!!!! Those thousands of chairs and ugly umbrellas covering all sea view must be removed and not just for one day as it is now!!!! Btw these chairs and beach beds are nearly all empty (90% at least). It's no need to prohibit but beds & chairs must be done JUST on request and where the guest need it. And sure not covering all beaches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! amja
I think they are crazy! Have you seen the beaches of Pattaya an Jomtien on wednesdays? Almost deserted, Wonder who´s gaining from that? A nice day on the beach for me includes a chair, umbrella, being able to get a beer, food and sometimes a footmassage with pedicure. Amja
ClutchClark
This is great news. Its exactly what the TVF community wanted and now its happening and the jubilation and high-5's to the Thai Gov't for continued enforcement is staggering. What...wait...thats not what is happening? The noise is not ebulant cheering but more TVF snivelling? Thailand might be changing for the better but the TVF community never will. ;-)
Felt 35
I thought the mats was allowed or so a vendor told me at Nai Harn beach a few days ago but a chair or bed underneath was prohibited?
