Out of the blue pulled about 10 ticks off my little French Bulldog last 2 days. Up until now not seen a one. I seem to remember in her clinic book seeing something about tick injections. Should I take her back for a top up? Is this to prevent ticks or only for sickness caused from ticks?

Or am I better getting a collar or frontline or something?

Keep an eye out because infection is common.

Maybe the vaccine she got was for infection not prevention?

There is no definitive defence from ticks.

All you can do is try to keep on top of them.

Jabs, Collars, Sprays, Powder. Shampoos, Front Line etc. All work up to a point.

must be an infestation somewhere? I thought they liked long wet grass? I live in an estate house middle of the city. No bush or cattle and short grass? Last place we lived on a farm. Long grass, cattle everywhere. Never saw a tick once

If your dog is allowed inside then all it takes is one engorged female to drop off and crawl into a secure spot in carpet or furniture or crack in floor and next thing you know there are 100 little bastards crawling around.

BTW, I mean that in the sense that the mother is unwed.

Don't panic, don't read posts written in capital letters. it is true that some people have unfortunate experiences with ticks. The injections are to prevent infections caused by ticks, not to get rid of ticks afasik.

I buy Chaindrite cockroach spray and occasionally spray all the places where the dogs spend time. For the grass I also spray with Bayticol. However most risk is during the rainy season so the rain washes it away again.

So the dogs get checked regularly, and this is an art in itself, after a year of fighting we seem to have more or less eliminated the pests apart from one dog. An adult female tick may have up to 10 000 eggs in its body and if squashed on the ground the eggs remain viable. They hatch out at different times so it takes some persistence to get your place clean. The first warning we had was when we found adults climbing up the walls inside the house, easy to destroy but we had to check every day, the smaller ones are more difficult to get a hold of. I take a pair of tweezers and squash the buggers between sheets of newspaper. I remove them from the dogs with tweezers also and have never seen signs of infection when I do this despite warnings you can read against doing this.

Anyway there is no silver bullet for the problem, we bathe the dogs in a mild anti tick shampoo every week (this doesn't kill the ticks, but stops them multiplying)., the collars don't seem to help at all. One dog definitely gets ill if we bathe it so she gets extra attention.

just one thing.

Don't use tweezers. Just because someone has been lucky using tweezers only means they have been lucky and not that it is a safe practice.

Having been raised on ranch I have dealt with ticks all my life and usedto use tweezers for lack of knowing any better and thinking they were easy. we used all kinds of tricks over the years. As kids it was fun to toss them in the woodstove and hear them "pop". Only works for engorged females.

The fact is you can get quite good at just scraping them off with a fingernail even on long haired dogs like collies. But you have a short hair so it will be easy to find them and scrape them. Just wash your hands when you are done. Also when you are applying any sort of oil, collar or bath.

Look real close INSIDE your dogs ear !

And check the underside of your own cajones as well.

We just went over our small poodle cross dog this morning and found 3 ticks. I have found the easiest way to remove is to have a cotton bud and a small container of mouthwash (any brand) handy. Dip the cotton bud in the mouthwash and dab on the tick, they just let go and are easy to pick off the dog. I imagine it's the alcohol that stuns them, but it definitely works.

We've been using Armecide for a few years now on our dogs for ticks but it also works for worms and other parasites. We also give it to our cats (mixed into their food) instead of giving them worming tablets.

As soon as we find ticks on our dogs we mix it into their food and slowly the ticks start to die off. We used to have serious tick problems around our house but this breaks the breeding cycle. Frontline and every other medicine we've tried has been less successful than this stuff.

Who wants to take that risk, try it and the dog dies? Our dog had a severe reaction to Frontline, so I definitely wouldn't be trying Ivermectin, but maybe it's safe® in a big dog.

I have been through this tick nightmare. Its a war. I have it easy with a small indoor dog.........She has had it three times. What I do now is a monthly blood check to monitor all the values. The machine they use prints everything out same as a human.

The spot check for parasite only checks for antibodies so is positve for three months. The.PCR test checks for all tick parasite dna....3000b.....the others are just 400b.

Maybe to much info at this stage but this disease is painful and horrible to watch.

They say 50% of ticks carry one form or another of it. That does not mean you have a 50/50 chance. If the ticks in your area have it most of them will carry it.

Sorry to come back with this but there is NO magic bullet against ticks. shampoos help, Bayticol helps, Ivermectin and permethrin (as well as the other -thrins) all help. Giving them a going over every day helps, spraying places where the dogs tend to stay helps. Some of these tick killers also kill fish so no swimming in the fish pool allowed! and are toxic to cats.

Having said that I will keep my eyes open for Armecide and try that also.

hi nickj what i have found out this whole yr.of pcr.tests and yes our boy has had his fair share.is that this test only detects the ehrlichia canis if the dog has a large amount of,some vets call them capsules,that is why its deceiving when you get a print out of the diagnostic results only to see at the bottom,

if its small and they cant detect it says, BLOOD PARASITE [ EHRLICHIA CANIS] NOT FOUND

at this moment all his results are great except for his platelet count and a small amount of ehrichia which was detected by the snap test.

any advice you have please share it with us. our boy [my avatar] is our life.

All active chemical ingredients in products sold here in Thailand must by law be printed in English. Chaindrite crack and crevice spray contains a form of Permethrin, I have found other products that contain all three '-thrins'. (Cypermethrin, and another one I don't have any right now so can't recall its name). You'll have to read the small print on anything.

Be careful with this stuff, keep away from eyes and mucous membrane.

Cypermethrin is easy to buy, as the farmers use it for spraying their rice. (It's an unstable compound which decays rapidly when exposed to sunlight) I have used it to spray bedding, crevices etc, but not on the pets themselves.

But I think Bayticol is more effective.

I saw some yesterday! I thought it was a poor man's version of Frontline? Frontline has an ingredients I don't know anything about, Methoprene, which Controline doesn't. According to Mr. Google, Methoprene works against fleas so may be irrelevant to some people that are more worried about ticks.
