Can't get ADSL- box is full in my condo what are my options

I didn't get True dsl hooked up when I rented condo as I was staying between two places and had TOT connection at my old condo.. Now two months later I'm told the box is full no more connections ( don't really understand what this means...I live in Rajadamri area). They will add another box soon but can't get more specific. This has been verified with a Thai speaker at True office in Fortune Town. I asked about fiber-not in my building it's older. I was told just wait!

I have been using my prepaid mobile connection to tether to my lap top to do work and stream some tv shows. I have been really using a lot of GB( and mega bahts) doing this. Can I go to another provider or would they be sharing the same box? Any suggestions?

I believe the box would be vendor specific. Most condos only have have one internet wired vendor by telephone line and maybe one by TV cable.

I guess you could try wifi - but no way are you going to be watching video from the internet.

What it means is that the communal Internet in your condo is full to capacity. Adding too many users will bring everyone`s Internet to a grinding halt. It`s the same as adding many computers to one router at home, the more people using it, the slower the Internet becomes. Put too many on there and it will eventually crash.

It means that your condo management need to have an extra server installed running off a separate line to the one now operating.

Is this all wired and not wireless? Is there more room in the closet where the connections are? Is there power in there? I'd be looking to see if I could connect a network switch to one of the service cables and then hook it and myself into the switch. A 4 port duplex switch would give you 3 or 4 more connections than are there now depending on how it's made.

If there's wireless I might try a wireless bridge with a built in wireless network switch. You have to be within range though.

Good luck.

Cheers.

I suspect that all replies so far have missed the point.

The OP appears not to be looking at shared building internet but at individual ADSL. This requires an individual phone line to be run from outside the building to connect to the building's internal phone lines and on to the unit. Many older buildings were never designed to have one incoming line available for each unit, and so the building "box" (which is shared by all providers) may be full.

There's not much anyone can do about this apart from wait for someone else to cancel their DSL, or try and get the building to physically increase the number of incoming lines by digging up the conduits and/or laying new cables. This may be what True are talking about.

That's my understanding anyway.

It is also possible that True are referring to their own "box" outside the condo building, in which case another provider (3BB, TOT) may be able to offer service to that building from another "box". The building management should know whether their own circuits are full and they should be asked about this as that answer decides whether or not it's worth asking another company.

Services like 3BB wifi and True wifi (both transmitted from outside the building and covering a wide area) may be practical; these have no bandwidth cap that I know of but speed does vary according to the number of users in the area and the strength of the wifi signal. I get 3BB wifi for free with my 3BB ADSL and I have used it on occasions when my ADSL has been down. Anyone can buy it for 99B/month.

One last possibility may be cable broadband from the cable TV provider. Again, the building management will know whether this is available in that building or not.

I believe KittenKong and Langsuan Man are the closest to explaining what "the box is full no more connections" might mean.

In order to provide higher Internet Speeds an ISP usually provides a 'service box', in this case a multi-user point DSLAM (Digital Subscription Line - Access Multiplexer, containing multiple subscriber ports), as close as possible to the subscribers it services. Each 'box' can service 48, 96, 128 ...whatever the capacity of that manufactured box.

Saying 'the box is full" then means all the subscriber 'ports' are in use.

A secondary issue may be the availability of capacity left on the 'Trunk' or 'Backhaul' line providing service to the remote DSLAM. If it's already at capacity (if not oversubscribed) then the ISP may need to build up additional infrastructure to support another DSLAM box in the condo phone room.

Ask True to directly connect to another box nearby in another street if possible. They did this in my condo for me and they only had to go 200m farther away, you simply offer to pay for the extra cable length. It is amazing what the True technicians can do for a little extra money. My tel line in one box was 677-xxxx, now it is 679-xxxx. I love Thailand.

Box full good for you then when they get new instead of 1 of 15 you might just be lucky and be 1 of 3 using the cable so faster for you

But in the meantime I've been spending around 2000 baht a week for internet using my cell phone as a tether. That will end this week as I will have finished my last project and then can just go to cafes for a week or two using free wifi for occasional checking of emails.

Check out that 99B wifi that I mentioned. It works well enough (assuming there is a transmitter in your area). It is a very convenient fall-back and I would pay for it if I didnt get it for free. Also works in larger places around Thailand so good for travelling.

True do something similar.

Silly question maybe ,but can you get the 99 baht wifi if you are not an AIS customer ?

My phone is with True but I get the wifi on my phone for free with my 3BB ADSL. Not sure how it applies to anyone else but they advertise it quite heavily so I suppose that it is available to anyone. Worth a check anyway, I think.

I would think it is just a log in name and password , but it would also be good for a tablet

3BB WiFi contract with both AIS and DTAC to provide WiFi HotSpot Service for them nationwide.

Easy enough to use a USSD Code to subscribe using your AIS or DTAC SIM account, and not have to track down one of hundreds of payment options available to subscribe to the 3BB WiFi Hotspot service.
