BANGKOK:-- His Majesty the King has appointed five new commissioners to sit in the 9-member graft busting panel replacing those whose terms had expired.

The Royal command to appoint the five new commissioners to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) was published in the Royal Gazette and released yesterday.

The five new commissioners included

former member of the Office of Auditor-General Wittaya Arkhompitak, former director-general of the Special Department of Investigation Mrs Suwanna Suwanjuta, former deputy national police chief Pol Gen Vacharapol Prasarnratchakij, senior Supreme Court judge Surasak Srivichien and former director of the Army Internal Audit Office Gen Boonyawat Kruehong.

They were earlier appointed by the National Legislative Assembly and their names were submitted for Royal approval by the NLA president Pornpetch Wichitchonlachai.

Pol Gen Vacharapol Prasarnratchakij will become the new NACC chairman.

If they had their names published in the Royal Gazette and were appointed by the NLA, they must indeed be good people.......................cheesy.gifcheesy.gif

So misleading are the headlines. One would think he King handpicked these men when in fact their names were only sent to him for approval. I hope the kings health is good this new year and he makes some outings to see the people who love and adore him. Just as I hope the people he approved will live up to his majesties good name and respect in their new roles.

The NCPO appoints the members of the NLA, then the NLA appoints the members of the so-called independent organisations. Should they really be called independent?

With the vast number of civil servents (personel) whose responsibility it is to verfiy other panels, do tasks as assigned, honestly, effeciently,

I am in wonder of how anything gets done as everyone must be looking back over their shoulder all the time.

You can be sure they will be independent of any elected government and the Thai electorate.

Let's hope so. Imagine the electorate defends some suspect with "but we like him or her", or "but we just elected him or her".

Well, with the current appointment system, it's not difficult to imagine from which political faction the influential "we like him or her" and "we don't like him or her" will come from.

My guess would be that independent of how this new graft busting panel was manned some would agree or disagree with the panels actions based on their own prejudice. Just like we see with verdicts of various courts.

The only way around that would be to put Thailand under curatele and have a special UN court take over. Now wouldn't that be fun.
