800k Baht on deposit for extension of stay.

Featured Replies

I will be applying for an extension of stay based on retirement.

I have 800k baht on deposit in a Thai bank.

The rules state that the money must have been on deposit for three months on the date of application.

My problem is that I want to change banks.

If I withdraw the 800k and deposit it into a new bank account the same day does anyone know if this is acceptable ?

Logically it's the same 800k on deposit but with a change of banks in the middle of the three months.

However relying on logic in Thailand is not advisable.

Does anyone know the answer please ?

If you can't spend the money until get your extension approved why do you want to play with fire. Get you extension and then change banks.....why do some always try to over complicate their lives ?

There is a very good chance that they will refuse your application if you change banks. Even moving it to a different account at the same bank is a problem.

If you applying for your first extension the money only has to be in the bank for 60 days.

If you change banks the 3 month period will start gain !

Why not delay changing banks until you have the extension?

Thanks Ubon.

No it's not my first extension so I need the full 3 months.

If this question hasn't been asked before then maybe I will have to go to immigration and ask.

I need to change banks during the 3 month period.

I would not even bother asking. I would not do it. Period. That's asking for trouble. Even if you go in beforehand and get a verbal OK what will that be worth on the day of your application?

It has been asked before and the answer is always not to do it. I was trying to say that in a nice way.

Plenty reports of people changing banks being denied.

In 2015 Kasikorn changed my passbook to a newer updated version and I had some right grief at immigration (Bangkok) when I went for my retirement extention. They made me wait for 3 hours until they granted it.

OK, thanks.

Sorry I didn't know it had been asked before.

Guess I will have to bring over another wad of 800k.

You dont bring over another wad of 800k...you bank-transfer it..

ubinjoe is correct here....as he usually ls

Even a fixed deposit maturing during seasoning can be a problem.

I'm puzzled about why you would need to bring over another 800k. You can't touch the money during the seasoning period which is when you were asking about moving the money to a different bank so I don't see why the figure of 800k is pertinent. You can't use or obligate the money that is being seasoned so why the figure of 800k? You can bring over any amount of money that you want to spend.

I can't see any imperative that would require shifting banks during the seasoning period, unless it is a joint account (which is ineligible anyway) and you don't trust the co-signer?

If you are planning in advance of the 3 months I also can't see why you can't transfer to the new bank now.?

What am I missing here?

You can't use joint accounts for that purpose anyway. I reckon the OP has his reason for this though I can't guess it either.

More likely scenario with a false income letter if immigration asks for proof. So the applicant doesn't have the proof and just says sorry dudes, I don't have the paperwork so then the application is either accepted or rejected. Probably rejected. So the expat leaves. Why would Thai immigration pursue this? If they reject your application, they're kicking you out anyway.

I'm an Aussie and I get an Income Affidavit from my Embassy without providing proof.

However, I would never commit a Federal Offence of Fraud by swearing, in front of a Government official, a false Affidavit.

Phuket Immigration has for two years now required back up proof which I of course have.

In this age of tracking terrorist fund flows...any falsification of income or bank account data is risky. Even if you are making up income instead of trying to hide it....you open up yourself to further scrutiny.

Yeah but I doubt very many of us over 50 expats fit the profile.

At the very least you open yourself for unwanted attention from gold digging bar girls who think you make more than you do.....:0

I think more than half of the "letters" are illegitimate. Some even claim rental income, but once they pay the mortgage on the property, the net is closer to 6500 thb. I've heard some reports of back-up proof at Immigration for Americans, and I've thought that would be the next shoe to drop for the last several years.

Nothing at all new. Has been discussed for several years already. Sometimes its asked and sometimes not. It would be silly to need to show proof of a government pension every year. It's a lifetime benefit though the amount and exchange rate vary.

A post suggesting illegal activity has been removed, as have the numerous responses to it.

There are lots of SSDI recipients, between 50 and 62, who get far less than 65,000 thb. It seems like California will throw in a one way plane ticket.

You don't need that much when using the combo or bank method.

  • 3 months later...

Getting back to changing banks during the three months, you can't do it. My friend had his money in a CD, when it expired the money went into a new bank account at the same bank. Immigration wouldn't except it, because it was not in that account for three months. It has caused him all sorts of grief. He was on a retirement extension, now immigration has given him 60 days due to marriage, when that is up he will be able to apply for his first extension due to marriage, and in that case the funds only have to be there for two months, which they will be.

Thanks Ubon.
