Two killed and three others injured in a road accident blamed on stoning

AYUTTHAYA: -- Two female passengers were killed and three males were seriously injured in a road accident in Ayutthaya’s Bang Pa-in district on Sunday which the van driver blamed on stoning.

The driver of the Mitsubishi van, Mr Withawat Nilasart, claimed that a hard object thought to be a stone struck on the front windshield of the car as he was heading toward Bangkok on the Asian highway in Tambon Nong Chik, Bang Pa-in district.

He told police that he was startled by the incident and, as a consequence, momentarily lost control of the steering wheel forcing the vehicle to plough into the roadside bushes and catch fire.

Bang Pa-in police enquiry officer, Pol Lt-Col Samarn Sri-aroon, said he had to investigate whether the stoning claim was true or not but the driver was held in custody for questioning.

In Ayutthaya province alone, 27 road accidents were reported resulting to four fatalities and 30 injuries during the anti-drink driving campaign period starting on December 25.

Was he breathalised I wonder? If he was over the limit it makes the "Stoning" excuse academic.

Tragic, but why is this one news? It happens every 30 minutes in Thailand.

I was on this highway yesterday afternoon.

It took us over 10 hours to drive from Buriram to Bangkok.

Normally it takes about 5 hours.

There were a lot of impatient drivers who were "undertaking" everyone on the left side, usually with their left wheels in the dirt.

They were happy to force law-abiding drivers to the right hand edge of their lane so they could get through.

They were churning up a lot of dust, debri, possibly rocks too and they were usually driving much faster that the people

in the designated lanes.

It's pure selfish behavior that is so dangerous. We wished (in vain) to see a policeman stop them and reward them with heavy fines.

The majority of law abiding drivers showed amazing patience while these selfish idiots charged through as though they had

more rights than anyone else.

The reported accident is probably a direct result of this "driving on the edge".

When the edge drops away steeply it is easy to see how anyone could lose control and crash.

RIP to the young ladies who lost their lives.

The undertakers weren't the only hazard. The habitual weavers were out in force carving their way through the slow moving traffic

as fast as there cars could go, no indicating and many sudden changes in direction adding to our angst.

We witnessed one large dark grey 8 wheeler truck driving in the middle lane with not one light on operation at 8.30 pm.

It was practically invisible when on a dark section of road.

We also saw several "rear-ender" crashes with vehicles written off because they were following too close or did not brake earlier enough.

We also saw several cars in front of us who did not have any brake lights, so avoiding a collision when they braked heavily was made more difficult. We soon changed lanes and followed cars with good bright brake lights and kept our distance.

At some stage we were on a dual carriageway with most of the traffic heading to BKK. One driver we saw driving at very high speed in the same direction as us but down the carriageway reserved for traffic heading north. All you can do is shake your head in disbelief.

No police in sight ...
