Son Soubert, chairman of the permanent committee of the Son Sann Foundation, demanded that opposition lawmaker Eng Chhai Eang apologize to the the Khmer Krom community for a post he made last month on Facebook about a historic community leader.

In a statement, Mr. Soubert said that a video posted on Facebook on December 19 showed the CNRP lawmaker, who is also the chairman of the National Assembly’s first commission, giving a speech in Montreal, Canada, where he compared Khmer Krom community hero Son Kuy, who is also Mr. Soubert’s great-grandfather, to self-exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy.

Mr. Kuy was beheaded in 1841 during a battle with the Vietnamese for the Kampuchea Krom area, and Mr. Chhai Eang said this was similar to that of Mr. Rainsy, who is in self-imposed exile in France as he fights a number of defamation charges.
