BANGKOK: -- The level of Mekong river in Nakhon Phanom has dropped quickly to the extent that the waterworks authority in That Phanom district decided to store more water in reserves in anticipation of serious water shortage in the coming months.

Mr Sukhon Srina, manager of That Phanom district waterworks authority, said the quick ebbing of the water level of the Mekong river has started to affect tap water production.

To solve the problem, he said an excavator was deployed to dredge the bottom of the river to allow more water to flow in for tap water production. Moreover, he said water production was doubled to store more water for future use.

There are about 10,000 households in That Phanom, Renoo Nakhon, Pla Park and Nakae districts which altogether consume about 150,000 cubic metres of tap water each month.

Mr Sukhon was optimistic that there would be enough water to feed the 10,000 households through the long dry season.

However, he said he had sought extra budget from the Provincial Waterworks Authority to relocate the water pumping station to a new spot where there is more water for use.

Meanwhile, he urged households in the four districts to use water conservatively to ensure that there is enough water to last through the dry season.

Thus doubling the rate of loss! Thai science is really unique.

I'm in Vientiane right now and i overlook the Mekong

but the water is nearly gone, should call it the

Mekong river bed.

So sad to see the locals trying, and mostly failing to plant flowers in the holes of those concrete blocks. 15 years ago, it was a lovely earth bank right back up to the road. The river was overhung with ancient trees, and the fertile banks planted out with seasonal crops, that many families depended on. Small bars and restaurants sat over the river on stilts, there was no loud music, only peace and quiet in which to enjoy a beer and watch the sun go down. The Naga should rise up and rain fire down on the bloated old communists who turned such a beautiful stretch of river bank into a brutalist eyesore.

Please don't blame Laos completely for the shortage of water in the Mekong. Look back to the source of the Mekong and the number of dams on it in China before it even gets close to Laos and Thailand let alone further downriver into Cambodia and Vietnam.

Maybe I don't understand it.. but its a river and flows to the sea.. so if you dont use the water its lost anyway (flows to the sea). So doubling how much you store now would make sense. If you keep taking your normal levels you still let a lot pass to the sea (not being used). So now doubling and storing for when less water flows seems sensible.

I could have missed something here please tell me.

Example.. now 100.000 liters flows past.. use 40.000 (loose 60.000) taking now an extra 40.000 sure the level goes down but as its not standing still and gets replenished you still win. Because everything you don't take out now you can never take again.

Your reasoning would work for a lake.
