Police yesterday arrested a 26-year-old man for a brutal axe attack on a family of seven in Sihanoukville last month that left a mother and her young daughter dead, with the suspect allegedly confessing that a personal dispute sparked the horrific crime.

After a nine-day man hunt across several provinces, officers seized Loi Sopheak, a resident of Sihanoukville, at 9:30am at a friend’s house in Kandal province’s Muk Kampoul district, according to James McCabe of the Child Protection Unit, which assisted with the investigation.

The suspect, pictured stony-faced and barefooted wearing a white shirt and black pants, has been on the run since allegedly breaking into the Sihanoukville Commune 1 home of 32-year-old mother of five Um Phanna as the family slept on December 29, McCabe said.
