Marble Or Granite Source?

Featured Replies

I've heard that if you buy marble or granite flooring tile direct from the quarry in Thailand there are significant savings. Does anyone know prices, address/contact info for such quarries?

Thanks!

Hi Scarlett - Most granite / marble quarries are in Saraburi province. Their prices are lower, but the net cost also depends on the quantity you buy and how far you are going to haul it from Saraburi.

There are shops around Bangkok area that are as cheap (if not cheaper) and you could even buy smaller lots. The problem here would be to get a reasonable lot size without much colour and design variation. On the other hand, some of these shops deliver free in and around Bangkok.

If you have some time, drive along on the outer ring road (south-west) from Rama II up to Bang Bua Thong and you are sure to get some good deals. Most don't accept credit cards, so carry cash. Pay half in advance and half on delivery. If you don't speak Thai fluently, make sure you have someone with you who does.

All the best!

While I was driving to Surin some time back with a British friend of mine, we passed a place on the side of the road that was selling marble and granite slabs. I believe we were going through Pak Chong. He mentioned to me that he had bought some for his home near Phuket from a similar place like the one we were passing. He said he picked it up very cheap but not sure about specifics. Maybe someone else can offer further assistance.

We have always been advised not to use local marble/granite for flooring as it is too soft and wears fast. Believe it is better suited for counter tops. There are several long established dealers on Ratchada near the tile/bathroom stores but most marble dealers are tent operations and close/open often.
