MOPH promotes rubber use in medical instruments

NONTHABURI, 12 January 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is promoting the usage of natural rubber for medical instruments in an attempt to boost domestic rubber demand, says MOPH Minister.

The Minister of Public Health Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn has revealed in an interview that the Ministry will be working in cooperation with other agencies to help solve the rubber pricing crisis as appointed by the Prime Minister.

He said all MOPH subsidiary agencies are now ordered to focus on purchasing medical instruments and equipment that utilize natural rubber, such as gloves, condoms, patient’s bed, and shoes.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the regulator of medical instruments, will be asking companies to cooperate by manufacturing instruments using natural rubber as an additional ingredient. The Ministry is also set to propose to the government new investment supporting measures for small sanitary glove manufacturers in Thailand, to boost their competitiveness and reduce production costs.

The general public and the private sector are being encouraged to use products made from natural rubber such as sanitary gloves used in the food industry to reduce contact to foods, and increase precautions against gastrointestinal diseases.

And in Europe and US many medical practitioners tries to use natural rubber as little as possible as there are people that are allergic to natural rubber. Allergies to latex (natural rubber) is an increasing health problem around the world!

Yes or latex mattresses like IKEA has.

Or good cheap tires, latex suits, rubber boots, just make something of the rubber and sell that.

I expect all the ministries will make similar announcements for propaganda purposes, but in terms of any significant additional amount of rubber being bought it will be very little. I'm sure the rubber farmers are not falling for this govt tap dance.
