S. Korea leader calls for Chinese help to punish North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's president is calling for Chinese help to launch what she calls the "strongest" international sanctions on North Korea over its recent nuclear test.

President Park Geun-hye also told a news conference that South Korea will continue the propaganda broadcasts into North Korea that her government resumed in retaliation for the North's bomb test.

Park's comments Wednesday come amid a continuing standoff on the Korean Peninsula.

Both Koreas are piping propaganda meant to undermine the other across their shared border, the world's most heavily armed.

A nuclear capable U.S. B-52 flew close to North Korea over the weekend in a show of force meant to underline America's alliance with the South.

China participating in.... the "strongest" international sanctions...to punish North Korea? Not a chance.

North Korea is arguably the loopiest country on earth, but they are not at all out of control. They couldn't last a week without Chinese support and they do nothing that isn't approved by China. The Chinese are very firmly in control .

North Korea's actions serve two primary functions for China:

  1. They serve as a proxy irritant to the US.
  1. They ensure a divided Korea and prevent a US friendly regime from emerging on China’s border.

China will once again pretend to be displeased with the pesky Kim and will do some meaningless posturing in support of international sanctions. But they will also continue to keep his regime afloat as long as he does what he is told.

Will never happen. Do you think our brother Xi wants a united Korea on his doorstep?

My one wild-hair prediction about China for 2016: after Kim Jong-Un pulls some bonehead move against his neighbor to the south, China invades North Korea and installs a more rational management regime there. Kim Jong-Un ends up as a lounge singer in Macao. Lucky boy.
