PHUKET: -- It took the better part of two hours for Kathu firefighters to bring under control what has been described as a 'grass fire' near the wastewater plant in Kathu.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire near the wastewater plant on Soi Thida at 8:27pm tonight (Jan 25), as no less than four firetrucks were dispatched to the scene.

Many local residents in the area surrounding the bypass road – in Kathu, Rassada and Vichit – reported hearing "explosion-like" sounds around the time of the fire.

Some said the sounds resembled fireworks.

There were some loud fireworks exploding around that time, but they seem to have been further south of where the fire was.

Perhaps at Wat Chalong?

We watched big fireworks at around 7.55pm, they looked to be exploding over the main junction near Get Ho.

The porch, car and garden was full off burnt embers this morning.
