Police investigate recent IUU fishing and human trafficking cases

BANGKOK, 26 January 2016, (NNT) - The Royal Thai Police has recently arrested illegal fishing suspects, and will soon probe their involvement in human trafficking.

Deputy Police Chief Lt Gen Sriwara Ransibrahmanakul said that the arrest was conducted soon after the Crime Suppression Division received information about the crime from the Command Center to Combat Illegal Fishing (CCCIF).

The CCCIF said that six cargo and freezing vessels were operating in foreign waters without permission, a clear violation of the National Council for Peace and Order's Order No. 10/2015.

Police said the six vessels belong to Siam Tuna Fishery Company Limited, Three Wonderful Co., Ltd., and Shelt Service (Thailand). Initially, the authorities arrested two suspects, who later confessed to illegal fishing in foreign waters.

Officials are currently pursuing another suspect. Further investigation aims to determine whether or not the suspects have also engaged in human trafficking.
