And in Sa-kaew related news...

Customs officials in Sa-kaew busted almost 600 cigarette smugglers this past one year

Customs officials in Sa-kaew province this morning confiscated 13,000 packs of fake cigarettes worth 600,000 baht from a pickup truck that was used to smuggle them in from Cambodia. Officials had chased the suspected vehicle until it overturned. The driver was able to escape.

Customs officials have delivered the vehicle and the cigarettes to Khao_chakan (เขาฉกรรจ์) police station, and officials believe the perpetrators will be tracked down without too much difficulty due to documents left inside the vehicle. This batch of fake cigarettes would fetch 300,000 baht in profits if released into the market. Officials said the offender would be fined 7 million baht if caught.

Somphot Kaewnuam (สมโภชน์ แก้วน่วม), a Customs official in Sa-kaew, revealed that over the past one year period officials in the province were able to arrest 598 smugglers of fake cigarettes and 144,000 packs of the forged products. 24 million baht in fines were acquired for the state.

However, smuggling remains active as there are 400,000 cigarette retailers in Thailand and the profits provided high incentive. The cigarettes cost only 2-6 baht per pack to make, but retail for 42 baht per pack.
