Health Min urges public be wary of MERS

Bangkok, 29 January 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has called for cooperation from the public in protecting themselves from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and for those returning from at-risk countries to monitor themselves for symptoms.

Director-General of the Disease Control Department, Dr. Amnuay Kajina, has provided an update on the condition of an Omani man found to have MERS, who is currently being treated at Bamrasnaradun Institution, revealing that overall he is in stable condition but remains under close care and in quarantine.

On monitoring against MERS among the public, the director-general urged the public to adhere to the measures of the Ministry of Public Health. He reminded citizens to eat well-cooked food, frequently wash their hands and to wear a hygiene mask if necessary.

He stated that people exhibiting respiratory illness should be avoided and that people with chronic illness should not travel to countries known to have MERS infections. Those with a necessity to travel to such countries should monitor themselves for symptoms such as coughing, fever, mucus or sore throat for up to 14 days upon return and submit themselves for medical assistance if any of the symptoms emerge.
