ASEAN community urged to move forward together

Pimchanok Ratanapises

BANGKOK, 29 January 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs this week held a seminar on the Future of the ASEAN Community: Beyond 2015 and Towards 2025, and launched a Pathfinding book on "Positioning the ASEAN Community in an Emerging Asia: the Thai Perspective" as well as introducing the concept of "2025: Forging Ahead Together."

Mr. Jakkrit Srivali, Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, welcomed all participants and keynote speakers, including Mr. Kavi Chongkittavorn, Dr. Suthad Setboonsarng, Dr. Termsak Chalerm Palanupap and Mr. Apichai Sunchindah. He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently held a number of activities including this event, to welcome the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community.

Mr. Kavi Chongkittavorn, a former special assistant to the ASEAN Secretary-General, pointed out that ASEAN is an unbreakable regional organization which is not too strong and not too weak. In the complex and changing environment today, Thailand should deal with all major powers, including the United States, China and Russia, he said. For that reason, Thailand is bound to adopt policies alongside the bloc's visions which will be pivotal to the development of the country and the ASEAN community.

Dr. Suthad Setboonsarng, a Former Deputy ASEAN Secretary-General, said the ASEAN community is a platform for moving forward. As 25% of the ASEAN GDP involves internal trade, ASEAN nations should speak with one voice and not compete against each other but work together. Besides, the community should act less as a national entity and more as a regional bloc in favor of shared development and achievement.

Apart from politics, security and economic affairs Mr. Apichai Sunchindah insisted that the ASEAN community promote joint initiatives and emphasize public awareness since the bloc is a people-based organization. ASEAN needs to adopt a common resolution to combat non-traditional threats such as drugs, human trafficking and climate change.

All the keynote speakers agreed to the non-interference principle which need not be changed but may yet be made more liberal. The most important point is to turn regional interests into regional policy.

.......Leading the forge.

Another hallow, meaningless headlines, book on bringing people together, right... why didn't I

think of it first?...... what dose it even mean?......

"The most important point is to turn regional interests into regional policy."

Thai interpretation of "Most important point": Make Thai and Thainess the official language and culture of the ASEAN community.

Moving ASEAN forward together will be like herding cats.

They stopped the spiel when all possible clichés were exhausted.

Next meeting scheduled once cliché 101 book 2 has been digested.

I'm not sure Singapore for example wanting to get too involved. It's a proper 1st world country. Too much blatant corruption surrounding other ASEAN countries might tarnish it slightly

They will move forward together...without Thai interference. Thailand will be left doing what it always does; one step forward and three back !

Thailand already has the slogans, the flags, the committees, the television adverts......

now they are being unreasonable:

"For that reason, Thailand is bound to adopt policies alongside the bloc's visions"
