And the winner is…Diversity! Screen Actors Guild Awards honour black performers

"I think reality is the most important thing that needs to be faced"

LOS ANGELES: -- Doing the double, Idris Elba took home two gongs from Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards on a night when diversity was THE big winner.

The black, British actor won Best Supporting Actor for playing a mercenary commander in Netflix’s West African war drama ‘Beasts of No Nation,’ and best actor in a limited series for BBC’s crime drama “Luther”.

“I really don’t know what to say tonight but two wins in one night is incredible,” Elba said.

He also joked on stage: “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to diverse TV”.

Several black performers were honoured including Queen Latifah who was named Best Actress in a TV Movie or Mini-Series for ‘Bessie’.

It marks a big contrast to the all-white acting nominees of this year’s Oscars.

“I think reality is the most important thing that needs to be faced,” Queen Latifah told reporters.

“The world is very diverse. We are global. America is very diverse and the boards that vote for these films and television really should reflect the people who watch the content.”

The top three film awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles still went to white actors – Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson and the cast of “Spotlight” about the Boston Globe’s probe of child abuse in the Catholic Church.

Larson, who played a woman held hostage with a young son in “Room,” was named Best Actress while DiCaprio will be hoping that his Best Actor prize for playing a fur-trapper in pioneer-era retribution drama “The Revenant” means his first Oscar is just around the corner.

It is so sad that the news is about the color of their skin. Too bad the choosing committees can't simply concentrate on talent and ignore the politics.

It's the good ol' US of A. Cannot think of anywhere on this planet more racist.

Haven't done much traveling?

The message here IMHo, is the Academy awards should be let off the hook on this one... here is why, If S.A.G. has been shown to "honor diversity" and proven not "racist" with these awards and yet still not awarded any black actors for film roles,(the awards in the article are for TV shows) ... then thay are supporting the Academie's choices for this years nominations... maybe as said by some, this year the best performences were by caucasions.

Agreed. It's not much fun being white there anymore.

Think harder Canuck because most countries in Eastern Europe and Russia are far more racist. China is also more racist.

There are awards for blacks only in music and acting. There are no awards for whites only in either of these fields. If there were whites only awards, can you imagine how many more the blacks would be protesting and boycotting against their perceived racism. I am sure that this number would be many more than the numbers associated with their current unjustified stance against the Oscars. Many black fools are also being influenced by the bigot, Al "not so" Sharpton. First things first! Flush the black only awards as this is far more racist than the Oscars. FULL STOP!!

Surely the winner is Political Correctness, not Diversity.

SAG members just making sure Political Correctness compensates for the Oscar snubs.

However, I sympathise with the white SAG nominees who were the victims of PC.

Alternatively, SAG has a much more diverse voting membership.

Not sure about that, these awards went to cable TV movies which recently have been getting great reviews, much better than film releases Beasts of no nation especially.
