Rainsy Accuses Unnamed Opponent of Cowardice

Khmer Times/May Titthara

Sam Rainsy, president of the CNRP, said that “the person” who used the court system to put pressure on him was a coward, during a speech in Montreal on Sunday. At a reunion event attended by Cambodian people living in the French-speaking Canadian city, Mr. Rainsy, who is currently in self-imposed exile, said that in light of the recent pressure leveled against him and other CNRP officials, his party was not scared. Despite multiple court allegations against him, these alleged attempts at intimidation had failed. “The person who forbids Sam Rainsy from entering the country is scared of Sam Rainsy. He is a coward. If he was a brave man, there would be no reason to be scared of Sam Rainsy. One versus one,” said Mr. Rainsy.

Warrants for Mr. Rainsy’s arrest were issued by Phnom Penh Municipal Court over two charges. He was sued by Hor Namhong for defamation and incitement to discriminate following his claim in 2008 that Mr. Namhong was the Boeung Trabek prison chief under the Khmer Rouge regime. His second charge is for allegedly forging documents relating to the case of former CNRP senator Hong Sok Hour. Mr. Rainsy has also been sued by Ky Tech, Heng Samrin’s lawyer, for a post he published on Facebook.
