CDC spokesman: Charter drafters discuss criticisms against draft constitution

BANGKOK, 3 February 2016 (NNT) – The Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) has already discussed criticisms against the latest version of the draft charter, according to the team’s spokesman.

CDC Spokesman Chatchai Na Chiangmai said that the charter drafters have brought up criticisms regarding the new draft constitution and most members agreed that such disparagement is common when the society is going through a transition.

Mr. Chatchai said that the charter drafters noted that the criticisms emerged because some were worried about losing benefits, while some simply did not understand the content of the draft charter.

He added that the CDC is responsible for clearing up any misunderstandings through all possible channels, in order to build trust and confidence among the public.

The CDC Spokesman went on to say that the latest public forum in Chiang Mai province has found that some people agreed with the intent of the new constitution, particularly the parts related to anti-corruption and political interference in the bureaucratic system.

So any critic is a disparagement? Wow! Say a lot about the willingness to openly discuss.

I believe the word "discuss" is a translation error.

It should read "dismiss".

"Mr. Chatchai said that the charter drafters noted that the criticisms emerged because some were worried about losing benefits, while some simply did not understand the content of the draft charter."

I'd like to say the arrogance of these people was amazing but it isn't - they truly think they have come up with a work of art and if anybody doesn't like it it is the fault of those people criticising, not the authors of this regressive document and certainly not the ancient chairman who, as Mourinho might have said, is a "specialist in failure"..............

In a recent Suan Dusit Poll over 60% of respondents to Suan Dusit Poll are not sure that the draft constitution of Meechai Ruchupan’s Constitution Drafting Committee will be accepted in a referendum.

This charter goes beyond disparagement. The draft is a fundamental failure in the understanding of basic human rights and liberties drafted by people who dishonor the Thai people's sovereignty and demean their right to self-determination. The Meechai charter drafters from the beginning rejected out of hand any understanding of the nature of democracy in any nation. What they deliver wouldn't even make a good comic book.

"some people agreed with the intent of the new constitution, particularly the parts related to anti-corruption and political interference in the bureaucratic system."

So they think the elected government should have no control of the civil service? Obviously this would only work if the elected government has no real power and the "deep state"--the military, police, civil service, judiciary, and that other party that can't be mentioned--runs things behind the scenes.

Is anyone surprised this is the kind of constitution the junta has produced?

I hope not, after all, this was the warning that was given beforehand. They failed in sufficiently curtailing things in 2007, so the next one would be even more restrictive.

IF this constitution becomes the law of the land, Thailand will be a democracy in name only.
