BANGKOK: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pushing for a 780 million baht special budget from the government in 2016 in hopes of stimulating tourism domestically during the low season. The TAT plans on using 100 million baht on the promotion of the Tiew Tua Thai campaign, which is slated to start in March.

The remainder will be used to fund large tourism festivals, special sporting events and lighting at the country’s major tourist attractions.

Tourism is major economic driver for Thailand at a time when exports continue to decline. The TAT estimates that foreign arrivals in the country will increase to over 30 million in 2016. In 2015, Thailand received roughly 29.9 million foreign visitors.

The revenue target for tourism is currently 2.41 trillion baht, higher than the 2.25 trillion generated in 2015.

In there dreams!

a 780 million baht special budget

For FY 2016 the government got a fresh fund totalling 937 billion baht for 2016 fiscal year to be mobilized by means of issuing 5-50 year treasury bonds to be used to refinance old debts and fund infrastructure projects. That compares to 705 billion baht it got for fiscal year 2015. Now after just the first quarter ending January 2016, TAT wants a special budget increase?

Within the first quarter the junta has already made substantial off-budget expenditures to prop up rice and rubber prices, and compensate the fishing industry for compliance with UII. With TAT's request and the provisions of Meechai's darft constitution that will require expansion of public health care benefits and free higher education, the next government (end of 2016 or mid-2017)will be so burdened with debt that it will not be able to change Prayut's financial agenda for years to come.

Sounds like Junta paradise. wai2.gif
