PHUKET: -- The central government needs to reassess how it determines Phuket’s budget due to the vast number of tourists for which the island’s infrastructure needs to cater, said Phuket Honorary Consul for Nepal Pranee Sakulpipatana at a seminar on the island’s image on Friday.

“The central government calculates the budget for the island based on its registered residential population of about 380,000 people. They fail to factor in the need for the island to take care of more than 12 million tourists, as well as unregistered Thai citizens and expats – all of whom consume resources and put pressure on the infrastructure,” said Ajarn Pranee.

“We need space to breathe; we need more infrastructure development; we need the central government’s help to better develop the image of Phuket,” she said.

Pakpoom Intharasuwan, the provincial chief administrative officer for Phuket, explained that he had been doing his best to secure a larger budget for the island in order to ensure the safety and well-being of tourists and locals.

“We have explained the situation to the central government. This is part of the reason that we have been given such large budgets for the underpasses and flyover projects,” Mr Pakpoom said. “These infrastructure development projects might be an inconvenience now, but they are good for the future of Phuket.”

We need good law and order, we need regulations enforced, we need an end to the mafia corruption ...

Pouring money into a hole. will not do it.!

We need good law and order, we need regulations enforced, we need an end to the mafia corruption ...

Never happen, the islands are a law onto themselves

I did say 'need' .... but will never happen ....

More positive news required? Unfortunately bad news always dominates the media. There are a lot more accidents and violent incidents than there are cases of tourists' wallets being returned or a lost kitten being found, for example.

Only "380,000 registered residential population" - no wonder it's so easy to buy power here.

Big reality check needed to bòost Phuket tourism.

Only "380,000 registered residential population" - no wonder it's so easy to buy power here.

Have you just realised this NKM. The cost to profit line here in Phuket is very small, given the huge profit potential ...

When they actualy realise the problem?

I knew the registered voters on Phuket was low, very low. I didn't know it was as low as 380,000.

If you remember, I suggested all the expats have their wife or girlfriends register, to try to get some change here, especially when Mr.K was the Mayor of Patong for over 20 years.

"The cost to profit line here in Phuket is very small, given the huge profit potential ..." - unfortunately, it's the same with the police here, and this is why Phuket now has the insurmountable problems that it has. Basically, lack of good Governance and law enforcement.

In the near future, they will all wonder how lucrative The Golden Goose turned into a miserly Peking Duck. biggrin.png

yes, I get it! You need a bigger budget to develop Phuket's image, so that more tourists come and after that you will need more space to breath in and out, and bigger, better infrastructure and then you need to develop Phuket's image again, so that even more tourists arrive, after which the breathing becomes a problem again which will affect the image still in development...

such a sad, sad life. sad.png

...duhh....when was the last time anyone was audited on the island....

..and they want yet more money....

It's way too late now.

Way too late for Phuket and Pattaya both. Both places too overbuilt and with little regulation to keep the area pristine. If I had a business in either- I would get out as quick as possible.

Is he wearing pajamas?

Actually a bigger budget would only waste more money. How about cleaning the place up? How about the taxi scams, the jetski scams, the viagra scams, the price of beer scams?

If you look at this guy, there's no budget big enough...

And, btw... if you would take all tea money paid, there would be plenty of cash to fill more than all the pot holes around the island's roads

The wealthiest province in the country and they have there begging cups out. Far too

many at the feeding trough I am guessing. whistling.gif

It would take more than money to boost phukets image ! Very bad press all over the world. When people ask if I still go to Thailand and Phuket ,they say that , "shame, it's spoilt, all rip off merchants from the airport arrival to departure. "Anyhow, it's too late, the damage has been done. Over built, no infra structure, the sea water once pristine is now polluted, taxi thugs, thieving youths on motorbikes, and the most dangerous roads that you have to take to get from one beach to another.Death Pass Island as a new name comes to mind. All that plus , the Thai charm just isn't there anymore

We need good law and order, we need regulations enforced, we need an end to the mafia corruption ...

Yes, not a cover up~never ever learn...I guess after you smash your head against the wall long enough, it doesn't hurt ant more

We need to get rid of the scam. Einstein.

That 380,000 registered residential population includes children who don't vote. Patong has only 12,500 eligible voters and phuket city only 44,000. You only have to pay half to get control so it's a pretty cheap investment.
