Thailand expects review by U.N. aviation body to be delayed

BANGKOK: -- Thailand is likely to delay a review by the United Nations' aviation agency until early 2017 because it needs more time to improve the qualifications of Thai auditors, the country's new civil aviation authority said on Monday.

Thailand's aviation industry is under scrutiny after the U.N.'s International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) downgraded the country in June 2015, giving it a red flag for missing a deadline to resolve significant safety concerns.

Pressure was mounting after the U.S. Federation Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded the country's safety ratings in December last year.

That's it folks get the propaganda out early but it's a bit cheekly saying the review ' should ' be postponed.

One day, I hope, the world will waken up to exactly what extensions to deadlines etc mean here, just more time to sit on hands.

But we are Thai. A special case!

Downgraded in June 2015, giving it a red flag for missing a deadline to resolve significant safety concerns.

So the response is the Thai government will delay remedies unitl mid-2017?

ICAO needs to simply suspend Thai flights until concerns have been satisfied. Not to do so will make ICAO complicit in any air accidents.

ICAO's credibility is at stake if it allows further delay without sanctions.

Surely the answer to this problem is bring in experienced auditors from abroad to carry out the task whilst helping in the training of the Thai auditors.
