Cambodia is Open for Investment, PM tells America

Khmer Times / Chea Vannak

Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday made a direct appeal to businesses in the United States to increase investment in Cambodia, ahead of the US-ASEAN Summit in Sunnylands California, and just days after Deputy Prime Minister Sok An spoke with officials from the US Embassy here about increasing trade and investment between the two countries.

In a speech delivered to about 500 Cambodians in California’s Rancho Mirage yesterday, Mr. Hun Sen said that during his meeting with visiting Secretary of State John Kerry last month in Phnom Penh he was asked “what do you want to get from the US?”

Mr. Hun Sen said he told Mr. Kerry that he hopes the US increases imports from Cambodia by eliminating quotas and import tariffs, that US businesses increase investment in Cambodia, and that Washington write off debts owed by Cambodia from loans given to the government of General Lon Nol, who seized power in a coup in 1970 and held it until the Khmer Rouge ousted his government in 1975.
