Hangdingdong
My son wants a pet and is quite taken with the bearded dragons we saw at the siam insect museum. after looking into it a bit I think a bearded dragon is not such a bad idea (he originally wanted a parrot) Does anyone know where I can get one in Chiang mai and the bits needed to take care of it. Does anyone have any experience with these creatures? Are they fairly easy to take care of? My good friend Google seems to think so....Any alternate pet suggestions? MadMac
Nope, I think you should get a pet that is suitable. A dog would do.
Don Mega
No idea what that is. Get a dog from Care for Dogs in Hang Dong. He will get bored of the dog sooner or later. I suggest a box of matches instead.

Chicog
If you mean Iguanas they are quite fussy and easy to kill.Get him a puppy, it will get him out of the house as an added bonus.
worgeordie
The first thing you need to do is buy a book,so you are aware of what it entails to look after a Bearded dragon, housing ,feeding, and keeping it in good health. I don't know of anyone selling Reptiles in CNX, there used to be one in Kamtien market and another at Meechok Plaza, but both seem to be out of business now. I am sure you would find them in Chatuchak market in Bangkok,as they are quite a popular lizard, they have character and can become quite friendly.one shop there sometimes has them, JJ Aquatics, check out there website they may have them listed. regards Worgeordie
Hangdingdong
Thanks for the first sensible answer... I have been reading up on the internet and will continue to do so. I did find the place in meechok plaza on the internet and was going to visit for a chat. If it is out of business that's my main line of enquiry gone. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated We bought from a shop near Suan Dok gate, it's on the inside of the moat south of the gate. They're pretty easy to care for and YouTube has many videos that go into all the minutiae--a good place to start. They seem to do fine whether they're handled frequently or left alone, and with kids and pets you're likely to have both of those happen!

daoyai
If the kid is into reptiles as I was as a lad,it is a good pet, if a passing interest, not good. Bearded dragons are a good starter rep. as you know, docile, and easy to care for. Other interesting lizard is the jacksons chamelion...also available and easy to care for. MadMac
The latter. Would not consider that as a pet, but so I wrote. Some people eat frogs, so who am I to judge?
cyberfarang
Good stuff chaps, I will go and check out the shop you have suggested this week. Thanks Serious question. These reptiles can live up to 10 years. How long do you intend to stay in Thailand? http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/advice/reptile-care-advice/bearded-dragon In all honesty, a hamster or a gerbil is much more suitable pet for a child. Easy to maintain and don`t need specialist care. Edited February 21, 2016 by cyberfarang

Easy to maintain and don`t need specialist care. A hamster would be great. And (just to keep the humour going) if he gets bored with that and you decide to get a largish reptile you can always feed it the hamster. Pets are important for kids, in my opinion.
