Rainsy Trumpets Aid Cut Threats Again

Cambodia faces a suspension or reduction in foreign aid from donor nations if the country’s leaders do not implement reforms to ensure genuine democracy, Cambodia National Rescue Party leader Sam Rainsy warned on his Facebook page yesterday from Paris, where he is in self-imposed exile again.

“Donor countries that are democracies have no interest other than seeing recipient countries also become democracies able to progressively become prosperous and self-reliant,” he wrote in a bilingual post above a photo of US President Barack Obama that was taken at last week’s US-ASEAN summit, which Prime Minister Hun Sen attended.

“All dictatorships in poor countries hold hostage the people under their control by resorting to blackmail: they warn that any aid cut would only hurt the ordinary people who already live in difficult conditions,” Mr. Rainsy wrote.
