Ombudsman urged to probe Min of Education for unequal education rights

BANGKOK, 24 February 2016 (NNT) - Parent activists have submitted a letter to the Office of the Ombudsman, asking it to probe the Ministry of Education regarding suspicions of unequal access to basic education among Thais.

Lt Col Kamolpan Cheewapansri, leader of the Parent-Youth Network for Educational Reform, along with representatives from the National Parents Network Association presented the letter to Deputy Secretary-General of the Office of the Ombudsman Tavin Inchamnong.

They urged the Ombudsman to look into the Ministry of Education’s admissions criteria. They claimed the requirements developed by the ministry discriminate against poor students and violate Section 49 of the 2007 Constitution. Section 49 stipulates that every Thai citizen is entitled to at least 12 years of free education.

The activists also want the Ombudsman to investigate the roles of those responsible for the new regulations and submit their findings to the government so that Thai education can be improved.

Unequal education. Yes poor students cannot afford to give brown envelopes.

So they have no chance.

Yes, we all know about equal policies. It just some believe they are entitled to be more equal than others.

What else is new?

A Mercedes trumps a Camry. A Camry trumps a March. A March trumps a motorcy. A motorcy trumps a pedestrian.

Why Farangs can't understand this simple Darwinian scale of importance.

TSK, TSK ! Farang can't understand Thainess.

It is so much different in Oz. One teacher, one room rural schools offer just as good an education as any in the capital cities, but only because capital cities don't have one teacher, one room schools.

But they do have electricity.

I am exceedingly saddened by the dismal results exhibited by youngsters who trust “teachers” who are tasked to enhance their future success by educating them. Here in our Isaan village I see children, full of joy and energy, trudging off to school. What do they learn while there? Many days are spent on sports/camping/ marching/reciting little understood political or religious platforms.

Do children learn how to add/subtract/multiple without calculators? Do they learn a process to figure out how to find a solution to a challenge in science or any other academic or life situation? Do they learn how to explore or enhance on possibilities in any human interaction e.g. IT, environment, agriculture etc.? I suspect not.

Many times I see “teachers” out of school environments during school hours in shopping establishments, or restaurants. Maybe there are valid reasons for this, but how they teach when they are not there. And if they are there do they really TEACH? Then there are the sanctioned days off for religious observations… too many to remember. Let’s not forget the time off for “summer vacation.” Does there appear to be much time “wasted”/ spent not learning?

Young adults here know little of nothing about life, life outside the village, or Thailand. Is any form of geography learned? English certainly isn’t e.g. a recent graduate from a prestigious Thai university who spent five years “learning” to be an English teacher cannot speak English.

I’ll end this opinion/rant and apologize for doing so, because most of you who might read this already know how the children here are being robbed. They are being robbed of the joy of exploring their intellectual capabilities. I’m very saddened by minds that are wasted.

They should change the name to.

Ministry of stopping education .

That's got my vote. I just saw a video (from the other newspaper) of a male teacher hitting teenage female students in the head while lined up in front of a blackboard.

How can a child learn under these barbaric conditions. Maybe parents... well maybe not Thai parents... would be "up in arms" if their loved child were hit in the head with anything let alone something resembling a table tennis racket. Confusing place.

Are these paraent activists living in a time capsule? THERE IS NO 2007 CONSTITUTION!

Thereofre, there is no violation.

Add naivity to a complaint filed with the junta-controlled Ombudsman against the Junta-controlled cabinet minister. Prayut should personally make these people (who are not really very activists being 20 months into the junta's rule) understand that Thai people's rights and liberties have been suspended. And will remain so until the next constitution is endorsed.

So thank you for your complaint - to be placed in the circular file for further consideration. wai2.gif

Dear Mr. Ombudsman,

While you are at it, would you be so kind as to investigate what happened to the minister's brain? It seems to have fallen out of his head because when he opens his mouth, the only thing that comes out is stupidity. coffee1.gif
