Gov’t: Illegal Fishing on Rise

Police officials at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said cases of illegal fishing continued to rise last year, when almost 4,000 illegal fishing offenses were stopped and 181 were sent to court.

According to a Fishery Administration report shown at a meeting on Saturday, the administration had investigated 3,974 cases in 2015, an increase of 288 cases compared to 2014.

Director General of the Fishery Administration Eng Chea San stated that “since the fishery sector has been reformed, it has removed 158 fishery zones equalling to 953,861 hectares and later provided 856,357 hectares for local fishing, and kept 9,750 hectare as fishery conservation areas.”
