Online opinion poll shows Sorayuth’s credibility has dropped



BANGKOK: -- Wellknown news anchor Sorayuth Suthasnajinda’s credibility has dropped in the aftermath of his conviction of cheating MCOT’ of 138 million baht in advertising air time fee by the Criminal Court on Monday, according to an online pollster, People Poll Thailand.

People Poll Thailand is a joint opinion poll project of the law faculty of Chiangmai University,Thammasat University, human rights and peace study institute of Mahidol University and the social innovations college of Rangsit University. The pollster conducts opinion survey on one public issue or policy issue on daily basis and announce its results on its website, www.peoplepollthailand.com

The pollster conducted opinion survey on Sorayuth’s court case via smartphones during 12.30 pm of February 29 until 12.30 pm of March 1. 3,250 people responded.

The survey shows 48.7 percent of the respondents believe the news anchor’s credibility has dropped; 34.9 percent say his credibility remains unchanged and 16.4 percent are not sure.

Asked whether he should take a break, 44.2 percent say he should, 13.2 percent say he should stop hosting his news programmes permanently, 35.6 percent say he should continue working and 7 percent do not have an opinion.

35 percent say his credibility is unchanged. This is because in this country they completely expect anyone in a prominent position to be skimming a little for himself. And they would be doing the same, given the opportunity.

People will keep watching his show as normal, because to be honest the alternatives are not attractive. For the masses, his show is ideal.

His 35% approval rating is likely also more skewed toward the red shirt and large population that encompasses.

Fascinating point, and well taken. But, where will these modest role models come from? Will anyone listen? Does anyone care? Where are the Buddhist saints and seers when you need them? Where are the philosophers? Where are the geniuses?

In the US, at least you have the example of a few giant men, who contribute fortunes to make society a better place. Guys like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Ted Turner, Chuck Feeney, Paul Allen, George Lucas, David Geffen, Larry Ellison, Michael Bloomberg, Mark Zuckerberg among many others, contribute fortunes to charity, and benefitting mankind. People see this, and it does set quite an example. Sure, they have vast fortunes, but I could name dozens, and dozens of gazillionaires who give very, very little, both here and in the US. How about Kobe Bryant? It is astonishing how little of his fortune he has given away. How about Tom Cruise? With the exception of his forced donations to Scientology, does he give much back? What about Trump? He is considered one of the most miserly billionaires in the world.

From 1990 through 2009, Trump has personally donated a total of just $3.7 million to his foundation, which was incorporated in 1987. In fact, the billionaire is not even the largest contributor to his own charitable organization.

Does Toxic Thaksin ring a bell? How about the other billionaires within Thailand? How much do they give? Do they set an example for their countrymen? So, who is going to step up? Hope some start seeing the light, and start manning up soon.

Skimming a little? I disagree.

I believe it's more like: "skim as much as you possibly can if others are ok with you doing that".
