Thai govt and United Nations coordinator discuss political, human rights issues

BANGKOK, 3 March 2016 (NNT) - Luc Stevens, the resident United Nations coordinator in Thailand, has paid a courtesy call on the Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai.

The United Nations coordinator urged Thailand to bring back democracy and said the United Nations will support collaboration with Thailand in all respects. The United Nations plans to extend cooperation to Thailand though it has been suspended since 2014.

The Thai Foreign Minister explained Thailand's political situation and human rights issues and said Thailand is now proceeding along the roadmap's second stage and all suggestions about the draft constitution are being considered.

Touching on the human rights issue, Mr. Don said Thai citizens, including those in the media, still have freedom of expression in every way. Moreover, he said, Thailand can be considered the most flexible state in terms of freedom of expression in the Southeast Asia region.

Ha ha ha... Good joke!

Actually - though I am not exactly a fan of the government it is true that freedom of expression though obviously curtailed is arguably as least as good if not better than surrounding countries.I put this down to Thai resilience and spirit, irrepressible really - see social media. Also the government in a weird way does feel accountable so that despite its abuses there's a limit how far it can go - certainly not as repressive as it would like

Yet only yesterday the Bangkok Post ran a story quoting a senior government figure warning that any criticism whatsoever of the NCPO would bring retribution. Hopefully Mr Stevens reads the newspapers.

...who footed the bill......

Stevens is no amateur. He WILL understand the Junta on human rights issues.

Just like the press he will be silenced or will be adjusted or suggested in a proper way.

Bald-faced lying appears to still be a right of the self-appointed "government"

And the UN appear to be as disingenuous as the EU on 'rights' here. UN blithering about 'human rights' - no sanctions. EU - still whimpering over trafficked people - no sanctions. Christ ..
