PHUKET: -- Phuket police say they were unaware of mass SIM purchases before the arrest of a suspect in Phuket on Saturday, but are keeping an eye on such activities following orders from the national police chief.

National Police Commissioner General Chakthip Chaijinda has been in touch with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to discuss security concerns, Region 8 Police commander Tesa Siriwato confirmed today.

The discussions followed the arrest of a Chinese man in connection with the attempted robbery of a gun shop in Bangkok on Friday.

Time to require a TM30 for each SIM card!

Don't we have a law that all SIM cards MUST be registered with proper ID when purchased.

All SIM cards in use should be registered, how could this slip through the cracks.

Audit all providers to assure compliance.

There must be a list of every SIM card manufactured and who it was issued to to sell.

I think the issue is there is nothing stopping one from getting Somchai the local alcoholic to go and buy 100 sim cards in return for a bottle of cheap booze.

Even the the registering of sims is a farce. Mine is registered using a fictitious Thai ID number and a bogus name. I registered online. No photo provided.

Pointless, unworkable waste of time. A sim card from any county will work.

You'd think a professional would consider all possibilities before issuing such demands.

Oh..I forgot TIT.

The Thai authorities are super at data collection - all those photos, forms and photocopies for everything.

They are lousy at data handling. Thats why you have to get a letter from immigration to confirm your address for a new driving licence rather than the driving centre checking it on the computer.

Just look at the stacks of paper awaiting recycling at any Government office.

Does anyone really believe all that information gets processed?

How does the DLT check your address is current without proof ?

Moot point though as if you have a work permit no letter from immi needed.

Good of the General to give the villains a heads-up on this one. All they need do now is to lay low for a week or so until this probe/crackdown disappears into history like all the rest of their well publicised but ineffectual police actions.

You mean you believe immigration check the address you give them?
