how to record from car cameras?

Im thinking of buying a new car now..probably the new pajero... Pajero have cameras around the car, but not recording or store anything.. What i would need to do to get this car cameras recordings saved...and looping just like dashbord cams do?

AFAIK, no factory reversing/parking cameras also do recording. They'd spend their time recording mainly the ground anyway. The best candidate to double-up as a dash cam would be the front camera used for lane departure warning, but again I'm not aware of any car that allows this to be used as a dashcam.

My dash cam is an A117, got it from Aliexpress for about US$80. Great image quality day and night, will do looping or just insert new microSD card. Unobtrusive, install into cig lighter or wire it to ignition so will go auto on/off.

Its a great idea and one I suspect the Manufactures will get on top of in the next few years.

However, I am not aware of any software which allows for the existing cameras on the car to record.

That said: It may be possible for a specialist to take a feed from these cameras into an aftermarket setup and record on a loop but I'm sure it will take some serious hunting around.

do the cameras only work when in reverse.

maybe to do this, you would have to divert the camera feeds into some sort of relay box, and connect either to a phone or a recording device via bluetooth, they may only have live to the cameras when revese is selected, so some sort of rewire may be required. some head units allow the cameras to be selected other than when in reverse, the SONY XAV-68BT for example

the proof c200( http://proof-carcam.com/proof-car-camera/ )would do the job as an aftermarket item, but the pajero already has the 4 cameras fitted

exactly....the pajero have 4 cameras...so im thinking if i could use any of this feed before adding more cameras..

If it has 4 cameras, and you wanted a complete record, you would have to record from all four. Or disregard the side view and just record front and back. Still need two dedicated recording devices - one for front and one for rear camera. Unless a two channel recorder is used.

The side cameras only record the ground - what's the point?

The front/rear parking cameras have a FOV that only runs a few meters out - again, what's the point?

Cameras used for lane keeping assist are probably the only ones looking down the road far enough to be of any use as a dashcam.

Was not aware of this - thanks for the info. Seems money wise - and ease of installation - just buy two dash cams which are already setup. Plug in and go.
