UK-based Tullow Oil announced Wednesday that it has discovered oil in Kenya's northern Kerio Valley, which bodes well for the East African country's hopes to soon become an oil exporter for the first time.

The finding could mean the opening of a second oil basin after the opening of the South Lokichar basin, which is now being developed by Tullow, Africa Oil, and Denmark's Moller-Maersk. Kenya seeks start exporting some of South Lokichar's estimate 1 billion barrels of oil by September.
