BANGKOK: -- The lawyer of Somdet Chuang was warned today that he should not complain of unfair treatment afterward if officials of the Department of Special Investigation proceed with the case regarding the vintage Mercedes Benz without the testimony of the abbot of Wat Paknam Phasicharoen.

DSI officials went to the temple today to question Somdet Chuang, the acting supreme patriarch, regarding the car scandal but were turned back by the monk’s lawyer who demanded the questions to be made in writing.

Justice Minister Paiboon Kumchaya said that although Somdet Chuang had the right not to testify, the DSI officials had the right to perform their duty –which is to question the senior monk. He added that the officials were told to show respect for Somdet Chuang while performing their duty.

However, he warned that if Somdet Chuang or his lawyer does not want to exercise the right to testify then the DSI may have to proceed with the case without his testimony in which case the senior monk or his lawyer should not complain afterward.

The justice minister insisted that the DSI had treated Somdet Chuang with respect and had sought an appointment to question him in advance instead of just issuing him a summons as in normal case.

He pleaded with the lawyer not to play game and to cooperate with DSI officials.

The justice minister seems to have become personally involved in this case, wonder if that is his role or he has just selected this case for a particular reason.

Wonder why he is not intervening on the countless of other cases on the go slow, stalled, inactive list

No need to wonder, this acting supreme patriarch is protecting the abbot of dhammakaya who was supposed to be disrobed on order or the previous supreme patriarch. That abbot is involved in corruption case with the bank and aligned with Thaksin (corruption attracts corruption) Now the current people in power are hoping of course to get enough dirt on this guy so he can be forced to resign and a better candidate can emerge who will disrobe that shameful abbot for helping in the corruption scandal of the bank.

But of course if you are on the other side you might view it differently and want an supreme patriarch to disrobe pra Issara (i have no problem with it as long as the one i mentioned gets his punishment)

When Buddha Issara's temple got shot at the other day the news article reported the monk as Phra Buddha Issara. When the elected next Supreme Patriarch of Thai Buddhism is reported in the press it's Somdet Chuang and not Somdej Phra Maha Ratchamangalacharn.

The country of status and respect as a culture sure do love to kick a man when he's down.

On the other hand take a good look at his 'story'.
