I coming for 2 months and not sure if I leave the country during the duration. Can I just get a visa on arrival and just extend another 30 days if I stay in country.

What is your nationality? If qualifying for a visa exempt entry, you can get a 30-day stamp on entry that can be extended for a further 30 days at an immigration office in Thailand on payment of 1,900 baht. If you do not qualify for visa exempt entry, but are from a country whose nationals can get visa on arrival, then the VOA is valid for only a 15 day entry and this cannot be extended. In that case, get a tourist visa in advance if possible.

Note, too, that if you do qualify via nationality for a VISA EXEMPT entry, the 30-day airport chop, your airline might just not let you board if you don't have an ongoing flight out of Thailand within that 30 days.

A Visa on Arrival gives 15 days and costs 1,000 Baht and cannot be extended.

If you are talking about a 30 day Visa exempt entry the airline might not let you on the flight

without an exit ticket within 30 days.

You will get a 30 day visa exempt entry that can be extended for 30 days at an immigration office.

If you do not have flight out of the country within 30 days on arrival you could be denied boarding your flight to here. You could purchase a low cost one way to ticket to a nearby to overcome that requirement.

You could also get a single entry tourist visa that would allow a 60 day entry that can be extended for 30 days from the embassy in DC or one of the consulates.

Your best bet is to get tourist visa from one of the honorary consulates. Do it by mail, no problems. I remember the one in Oregon (Portland?) has received many favorable comments.

In general .... No

The onward ticket usually is applied by the airlines to those who do NOT have a visa from a Thai consulate or before they attempt to board the plane.

In most cases they will not ask you if you show you have already obtained a Thai tourist visa before your flight.

Portland, Oregon does not require an onward ticket to get a 60 day tourist visa.

Most consulates in the U.S. don't require an onward ticket for a tourist visa.

That is another reason why , if you can handle the $40 fee for a visa it is a smart thing to do so before you book your flight.

Pay the money, get the visa, and avoid the airline hassle.
