Traditional massage practitioners complain against TV Channel 3

BANGKOK: -- A group of Thai traditional medicine practitioners and masseuses yesterday (Tuesday) lodged a complaint with the Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine against a soap opera series of TV Channel 3 which, they claimed, are insulting to their practice.

Led by Mr Nopporn Wisutthisakchai, president of Thai Traditional Medicine Practioners’ Association, the group asked the department director-general , Dr Suriya Wongkongkathep, to inform the TV management or the producer of the drama series, entitled “Chaobaan Chaoruan”, that the March 9 episode had content which was deemed insulting to the practitioners of Thai traditional massage and spa.

Mr Nopporn said that many Thai traditional massage practitioners were unhappy with the TV episode in question and wanted him to raise this issue with the department’s director-general.

He disclosed that the Thai Traditional Medicine Council would lodge a petition directly to TV Channel 3 to complain about the matter.

Dr Suriya, however, noted that the drama series presented both the bright and dark sides of the profession and, as such, might make people in the profession felt offended. But he said that, in reality today, the traditional massage profession has become widely recognized and has earned the country a huge sum of foreign exchange each year.

However, he admitted that his department could not take any legal action against the TV Channel 3 because the episode in question did not breach any law.

There we are then, even this story has a happy ending.

Wonderful!

I have been in this country long enough to know that traditional Thai massage exists, is alive and well, perfectly respectable, based on ancient knowledge and can sometimes be almost miraculous in its effectiveness. I'll be eternally grateful to one old lady in Chiangmai who rid me of a terribly painful lumbago, and all it took her was about 1h30'.

I have also been in this country long enough to know that the word 'massage' is massively being used, in Thailand and elsewhere, but especially in Thailand, as a euphemism for commercial sex. It's stupid, it's hypocritical, it's insulting to the real massage profession, but it's a fact.

Now, clichés being one of the things human beings like most, try putting together the words 'massage' and 'Thailand' anywhere around the world, and you'll see the immediate smirk on people's faces. How do you change that ? You sue 98% of the world's population ? You drag hypocrisy and stupidity to court ?

The lakorn features a massage and spa business, not traditional massage at all, everyone knows what goes on in a spa. They should be more concerned about the usual depiction of Thai women as bitchy, screaming fighting harpies.

I have always followed the precept the 'traditional massage' on a sign is what it is and 'massage' is what IT is and 99% has turned out that way/ I think most people distinguish it this way.

And I would like to lodge a complaint against all the soap opera series of TV Channel 3, in fact the entire programming content, which, I claim, is insulting to my intelligence.

But then, of course i am not obliged to watch it

I refused the extras most of the time but there were times the lady was just to damn nice to pass up. Mainly cause they had all there teeth.

" Mainly cause they had all there teeth."

You were obviously unafraid they were going to bite you.
