Taxes on Local Alcohol and Cigarettes Increased

The government will increase the special tax on alcohol and cigarettes produced locally, with the implementation of the new tax to be effective from April 1, a move that has concerned producers. Taxes on beer will be 30 percent, wine products 35 percent and cigarettes 20 percent, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s General Taxation Department (GDT) dated March 22.

The new tax rate on beer, wine and cigarettes is an increase on the previous rate, which was 20 percent on alcohol and 15 percent on cigarettes. According to GDT, the Specific Tax on Certain Merchandise and Services is imposed on a number of local and imported products and services.
