Man given 2-year suspended jailterm for killing a dog

The dog owner was there and failed to control her animal. She should be charged too.

According to the original article the dog was a stray which was was "barking at the car before the driver got out of the vehicle and fired".

The complaint against him was made by a "concerned" member of the public who "filed a complaint with police, urging them to prosecute the driver with the newly-passed animal protection law".

I agree with the court in the sense that you cannot have people running around shooting in the streets. However, I understand his actions as he was fearing getting attacked by the dog.

But what surprises me is nothing is mentioned about the dog owner's responsibilities? She failed to control her dog.

I wouldn't be surprised if she had done as many other Thai dog owners' modus operandi - just let the dogs out on the street without any care for the dog or people. I am a dog owner myself and I see this on many of my daily dog walks. Other farang, Japanese and a few Thais have a leash and control of their dog, but many Thai residents in the soi just let out their dogs to do whatever they want.

So the law should work both ways that the owner also carry a responsibility for controlling your dog.

Dog was a stray.

Could only happen in Thailand. Any place else the dog owner would have been prosecuted.

It's not often you're right and you're wrong again.

too many dogs and too many irresponsible owners but he still should not have shot the thing in public

If he had killed it without shooting it, I would have said "good on you".

Animals as well as people who attempt serious assault on anyone unprovoked, deserve to die.

There is no place on this earth for such scum.

So the judges think it's OK to let agressive dogs run free on the streets and biting people? Thailand only krab.

Good that they don't have rabies or other diseases here which can kill you, ohh wait...

Any independent witness confirm the dog was aggressive? Or was this just an excuse invented by a sadistic a***hole?

The dog did nothing! It can't defend itself because it's been murdered. This b*****d should be put down.

Read my post again, I said "unprovoked", if the dog was provoked into attacking, then I would agree with you.

He was charged with illegal possession of firearms, illegally carrying firearms and cruelty against animals.

I think he got off lightly. Someone shooting a gun in public, especially outside a busy shopping mall is a danger to everyone. How many people in Los have a gun? A frightening thought.

Yes, it's the illegally carrying and discharging a firearm bit that seems to have been somewhat ignored.

Surely they are serious charges?

Interesting to see if the HiSo retired guy who also recently shot a dog in public gets the same sentence - if of course he is even prosecuted.

Yes I agree, but she also should have been prosecuted for letting her dog go around biting people. Can't go on a walk or a bike ride here without running the gauntlet of the festering things.

I like well-behaved dogs by the way before you start yelling.

Who says the dog attacked at all? Only the guy who shot it and he was convicted of cruelty to an animal which, I think, indicates that the court did not believe his story.

I think it is more likely that he lost face earlier and simply decided to take out his anger on a defenceless animal. As I said, he should be put down.

Been here 4 years. Come across many soi dogs. Never been threatened. Never felt uneasy.

She was not the "owner" and should have been prosecuted under health regulations for fostering vermin:

"A local woman filed a charge of animal cruelty against Wicha. Panita Sunthornrat said at the time she often fed the dogs and saw herself as the pack’s guardian."

After seeing the footage it must be clear that this pack of dogs should have been removed already by the government or some other institution.

They are overly aggressive and a danger for anybody coming close to them.

The shooter should be prosecuted for possessing a firearm without registration and using it in public.

The lady who feeds the dog should be prosecuted for dumping garbage (food) on the street to feed dogs.

The local government should be prosecuted for not having removed these dogs before this happened.

After seeing the video the court seems almost reasonable. The dogs in the video are already being extremely aggressive amongst themselves before the car appeared. Then they chased a moving vehicle. (Any pedestrian who walked into such a pack would have been in danger).

The man however was never in danger and stopped car to get out and shoot. This is purely a weapons/ possible animal cruelty case.

Even though nothing would have been done the right thing to do would have been to keep driving and report to animal control/police, not start shooting. Can't believe he was not required to submit his weapon to police as evidence however.

He should be rewarded! Here in Pratumnak around Cozy Beach packs of dogs attack people. One hotel in particular on soi one katsesin has a vicious dog that attacks and bites people. The owners just laugh and deny it is their dog. These dogs should be put down.

And people wonder why we from the West mock and laugh at Thailand's judicial system.

What should the appropriate response have been your honor? And I use that term loosely. Let the dog bite him.

Amazing Thailand.
