Government to register the low incomes



BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Finance will propose the cabinet the official registration of low income citizens so that specific aid can be apportioned to them.

Mr. Apisak Tantivorawong, the Finance Minister, yesterday revealed the ministry’s plans to have a formal registration of low income citizens in the country for the cabinet to approve within the next 1 – 2 weeks.

Under his proposal, upon receiving approval, citizens can then register within 2 – 3 weeks following that via government banks.

This will enable the government to decide on the appropriate welfare for each case.

He said the Ministry of Finance will be looking at setting up a specific framework for classification of the country’s low incomes within the next 1 – 2 weeks and will be focusing those who earn around 300 Baht a day.

In other words, people whose monthly savings account for no more than 30,000 Baht which the ministry speculates amount to around 19 million people.

New rounds of registration have been planned for January of each new year so that up-to-date details can be made such as the possible improvement in the financial circumstances of each case.

The government’s e-payment policy will be employed for this purpose, he added.

This is just a carrot to help that constitution go through.

Such a move is long overdue. The limited resource to help authentic cases of real poverty can actually be effective, rather than being used to buy votes.

Does this include Foreign English Teachers too!!

Most do not earn the 300 baht as the minimum 250 would be closer to the mark, and at 19 million already 950000000,

now with all the infrastructure, rail expansions, subs , rice , rubber , water

balancing the books ,( i would love to get a look at them )

must be a case of printing more money

Hmm. Might be easier and a lot less work to register the Haves, instead of all the Have Nots.

Do they mean savings or income? Because there's a big difference.

Either way, 30,000 baht seems an awful lot - I know many expats living on less than that and even those earning the minimum wage would only earn 9,000 per month.

300 baht per day times 365 days = 109,500 / 12 months = 9,125 baht per month income.

I'd venture to say that over half the population does not even have a bank account. They are just getting a list of names for buying votes.

Bearing in mind that they give old age pensioners with no income at all a whopping 600 Baht/month I shall be interested to see just how much they wish to help these poor low paid workers.

300 baht per day times 365 days = 109,500 / 12 months = 9,125 baht per month income.

thanks for breaking down that complex math, but who works 365 days a year without a day off?
