BANGKOK: Vesper, a bar and restaurant famous for its custom-made cocktails, was voted 17th in "Asia's 50 Best Bars 2016" by selected members of the bar industry in the region.

Created by Choti Leenutaphong and Debby Tang, Vesper was inspired by London’s Martini mecca Duke’s bar. Vesper has the feel of a European bistro and serves Italian comfort dishes.

Also making it onto the list is Q&A Bangkok (26), the sleek speakeasy on Sukhumvit 21. Teens of Thailand follows at 27th place after it recently joined the Soi Nana scene in September.

Must have a different idea of a good Asian bar. To me, a good Asian bar should be much different than any Western bar--starting with Asian drinks, delicacies, staff and other offerings.

The 50 best bars in Asia don't need to be Asian.

I like knowing that the city I live in has bars that are on par or better than what is available in other countries.

It's called having a sense of pride in the city you call home.

Do you also think every restaurant in Asia should serve only Asian food ... i.e., no Italian or French restaurants in Thailand or Hong Kong?

Voted 17th in Asia's 50 best bars 2016 - but as the highest placed Thai establishment that would mean they where in first place for Thailand i.e. Thailand's number 1 bar in this particular ranking.

Would be good if you could comprehend.

Happy to pay their prices on the proviso that they can actually make a good cocktail, and the joint isn't full of try hard Miss Kitty and Hipster types.

At those Western posh prices you're probably going to find the offspring of the rich, those that want to be seen and of course the expats who scoff at the 'cheap charlies" and want to be seen paying high prices for a somewhat pretentious menu and elaborate drinks.

If you frequented those type of places wherever you go then you'll probably enjoy.

Any survey that promotes a Soi Nana bar and the Bamboo Bar, Soi 3 as among the best in Asia, has to be disregarded as nonsense immediately.

You are giving away the only Bangkok area you seem to never familiar with...

The article was not about the bamboo bar on Soi 3. The article was referring to the bar located in the Oriental hotel. Perhaps one the most famous bars in Asia going back to the fifties.

The soi Nana mentioned is not soi 4 that is also called Nana Tai. Soi Nana is located off Rama IV, past the Hua Lampong railway station.

The fact that the commenter even entertained the thought that this might be about that shithole on soi 3 is worrying.

I just bought two coffee/cognacs at A La Campagne Pattaya. The guy put sugar/cognac in the glasses & set them alight. He then put in the coffee + another generous slug of cognac & finished with thick cream. The total was 518 including 10% service charge in a lovely bar. Anyone paying the above prices has more money than sense!

420 baht is a whole night's entertainment for me in Pattaya, including 2 big drinks (Siam Sato), a meal (30 baht noodles) and the company of a lovely lady of the night for an hour in my room. I'm not poor. My income is just under $6,000 a month, but I like to save my money. I live in a 6,000 baht a month apartment, not because I have to, but because I want to.

RIPOFF. Never...ever paying such outrageous prices. Not that couldn't afford it, just refuse to pay it...especially here in Thailand where everything used to be much more affordable. Typically not the case here anymore.

Hilarious. Are the crabs and burning discharge the woman shares with you extra?

Thank you for illustrating very nicely what Pattaya is all about.

If you enjoy a high fat / high sodium bowl of mama noodles, good for you. It explains why you have to pay for sex.

Who do you think you are fooling? You live in a 6,000 baht/ month slum because you have to. No sane person who has any self respect stays in a roach infested slum if he doesn't have to. 6,000 baht in a high tourist count area is a small room with a disgusting shower and toilet. Do you even have decent sheets that are regularly changed and washed? How about soap? Does your splurging include the use of soap?

My Patong condo initially cost me 25,000 baht a month and that was for a modest 4 1/2 before electricity and water surcharges and domestic staff pay.I saw what the 5,000-10,000 baht rooms were in Patong and they were vile and without security. Ghetto quality.

Vespers is good, but just one of many great bars in Bangkok now, including this big trend of all these "secret bars" in Thonglor and elsewhere. Do love the name though, lifted from Ian Fleming's Casino Royale, and you might remember Vesper Lynd great Bond girl in 2006 remake Eva Green.

If you want to know whether you would be comfortable there:

The crowds: Expat executives in the Silom area and hi-so kids with money to blow on proper drinks -

Here are some more links of bars in this motif:

More fool you if you pay 25,000 baht a month in Patong of all places. There are any number of nice, clean, reasonably spacious apartments in Pattaya for what I'm paying. I change and wash my own sheets. My apartment is spotlessly clean, comfortable and very quiet. I rarely see any cockroaches or other bugs. If I do, a can of spray quickly removes them. Patong on the other hand is a complete rip-off. Patong is a ghetto. I've never had a sexually transmitted disease. I detect jealousy because you realize you've paid way over the odds (25,000!) to live in the dangerous, overpriced hole called Patong.
