PHUKET: -- The Phang Nga based tour operator who is alleged to have allowed tourists to fish in a protected area of the Similan National Park has been given a 30-day ban from the area after failing to provide solid evidence to prove the exact location where the incident took place.

Lt Col Chakri Maigumponsuth of the Phang Nga Marine Police and his team yesterday (Apr 4) escorted the boat captain, Mr Lahmarn Kuji and one crew member, Mr Weerapong Pethsiri, for questioning after they allegedly took Chinese mainland and Hong Kong tourists to fish in Similan National Park territory and demanded they provide the location where they stopped to fish.

Lt Col Chakri said, “Lahmarn said that the location where he took the tourists to fish was four nautical miles away from the Similan islands. He also said it was within his normal route and not in national park territory.

“However, officials noticed that the location given did not coincide with the AIS geo-location system report,” he said.

“Officers asked to check the boat’s AIS system, but Lahmarn said the AIS system was not set up to locate the boat when it stopped so it must not be working correctly. They also asked to look at CCTV footage from the boat,” he added.

Tourists from Hong Kong display their haul of marine life near protected waters in Phang Nga province posted to social media and Pantip.

PHANG NGA — A tourist yacht has been banned from the pristine waters off Koh Similan for 30 days after its captain let a group of tourists to fish sea creatures without permission.

Although the fishing itself did not take place within the island’s protected national park area, the boat operator ran afoul of the law because it was not permitted to carry any fishing equipment at all, said Nat Kongkesorn, director of Similan National Park.

A ban of 1 year would be more appropriate. One month is nothing....

Next week this boat is moving permanently to Indonesia, as planned for a long time already. They couldn't care less.

Do we really believe there are not Thai fishermen also fishing these waters, especially as it was outside the NP? How do the seafood restaurants in Krabi and Phuket get their seafood? Just because the fishermen are Chinese and show off there is a huge reaction. The seas of Thailand are raped on a daily basis with unsustainable fishing. e- licenses will stop this?

Who cares so they took a few fish OUTSIDE THE PROTECTED AREA! And then they shared it with people. Want to complain about something? Complain about the mismanagement and practices of Thai fishing where drag nets are used to take every living creature they come across. Or better yet, complain about Thai boat fishing slaves. Lets not forget about the slaves the Thai fishing captains left and abandoned on the islands IN ANOTHER COUNTRY!

These few reef fish they took are NOTHING in comparison in the big picture of Thai fishing practices. Some of you people need to quit blabbing on topics you know nothing about....
